<b>CHAMPAIGN</b> - We caught up with the Centennial head coach Jason Zumwalt over spring break to get the scoop on the upcoming boys' tennis season. Zumwalt, a veteran player, <a href="https://www.pjstar.com/story/sports/2008/06/20/long-hot-winding-road-comes/42403303007/" target="_blank">competitor</a>, and tennis instructor in the Champaign-Urbana community is entering his second season as head coach for the Chargers.

<b>Zumwalt:</b> "I started playing when I was a little kid. I played at Dunlap High School and went to state with them. I was a walk-on at Bradley University in Peoria. I moved to Champaign and got a job with Ameren. I was an instructor at Atkins (Tennis Center). I taught a lot of private lessons in the area and then moved on to coaching. I've been the head coach for two years and one year before that (at Centennial High School). Pretty much all my life."
<p /><br />
<span class="hdcolor"><b>Sentinel: What's the fun part about coaching?</b></span>
<p />
<b>Zumwalt:</b> "Oh, man. Just the togetherness of the team. Watching these guys become better players but also molding them in life lesson, too. Just getting to know all the guys, the families and the togetherness; watching them grow not only as tennis players but young men as well."
<p /><br />
<span class="hdcolor"><b>Sentinel: Who are Centennial's top three players this season?</b></span>

<span class="hdcolor"><b>Sentinel: Who are your two sleepers this season?</b></span>
<p />
<b>Zumwalt:</b> "You saw one today, Ayan Ehsan. He has jumped way up from a little bit of off-season play. (He) really started in January and February of this year, getting out when he could. He is looking like he is slotted in at number six.
<p />
Another guy who was here today, who is one of the other most-improved players, is Matthew Jan. He won't make varsity, but he will be playing towards the top of JV."
<p /><br />
<span class="hdcolor"><b>Sentinel: Who are the toughest matches on your schedule?</b></span>
<p />
<b>Zumwalt:</b> "Obviously, it will be Central, which we all know how good they are, even though they lost four guys from their state third last year. University High will be the main team we will compete against for the sectional title. They are really good and they are deep. Normal Community is always really good. They are in 2A."
<p /><br />
<span class="hdcolor"><b>Sentinel: What advice do you have anyone who wants to learn to play tennis?</b></span>
<p />
<b>Zumwalt:</b> "Go out on your own or get a few lessons and see if you enjoy it. It's not the easiest, but the one thing I always say about tennis is that it is a life-long sport, like golf. You are not always going to be able to play football, basketball, or baseball. Tennis and sports like golf, you can play forever. I think it is an amazing sport and it is also great sport socially, too. I have so many friends and acquaintences in tennis as several of us do. I would say just go out with your family and whoever, see if you enjoy it and go from there."

<b>ST. JOSEPH</b> - Grace Osterbur had a stellar performance in the Spartans' first win of the season against Salt Fork last Monday, collecting three hits and scoring twice in four at-bats.
<p />
The Storm put a tick on the scoreboard in the first inning after Alexa Jamison scored on a walk with bases loaded and two outs.
<p />
Facing Sailor Pacot from the circle, SJO pitcher Ameilia Huckstadt prevailed on a 2-2 count to halt further Salt Fork runs.

</div>
The Spartans replied quickly with Osterbur getting things rolling after making it on base with a fly ball to left field. She would later score to tie the game at one-all thanks to a line drive to left field by Ellie Ward.
<p />
After shutting down the Storm's offensive effort in the top of the second inning, SJO added runs on a steal from third by Timera Blackburn-Kelley, and another run from Addison Frick's smash out to left field that scored Chloe Harper from third.
<p />
Harper finished the game with two hits and a pair of stolen bases.
<p />
The Storm scored two additional runs in the third and sixth innings but were unable to mount a comeback against SJO, who maintained a one-run or better lead on a beautiful spring day at Randy Wolken Field.
<p />
"It feels good to get the win, though it didn't play out the way the girls thought," said head coach Larry Sparks, who notched his 100th win as the head coach for SJO. "It was kind of an ugly win."
<p />
St. Joseph-Ogden scored six runs on 12 hits and committed no errors. Huckstadt earned the win after striking out nine. The sophomore hurler gave up seven hits and two runs. Blackburn-Kelley, also a sophomore, pitched two innings, retiring six batters at the plate and giving up a run on two hits.
<p />
"The pitchers threw well. The hitters will have their day next week," Sparks said. The Spartans have four games on the schedule this week, starting with Normal West on Monday and finishing up on Saturday at IVC, both road contests. "It was nice to face someone who wasn't wearing our colors."
<p />
Spartan fans can catch two home games, Tuesday against Westville and Thursday with Champaign Central, at beautifully remodeled Randy Wolken Field.
<p />
The Storm's season continues with a grueling back-to-back-to-back schedule this week, starting with a Vermilion Valley conference game against Oakwood on Monday. Tuesday, the Salt Fork is at Watseka, and back at home on Wednesday against Tri-County.
<p />
Jamison led Salt Fork with three hits and collected one of three RBI. Brilynn Barnett tallied two hits and scored once. Freshman Morgan Russell, Ava Ringstrom, Karlie McGee, and Pascot had one hit each in the team's first loss of the season.

<p>Each year many Americans pay a steep cost when doing their taxes. It’s not just the money people shell out to use software to file taxes online, but also the time spent and the stress that comes with worrying an honest mistake will be held against them.</p>
<p>Luckily, change is in the air this spring. Eligible filers in a dozen states will finally have a true public option this tax season: a new free, online, mobile-friendly software from the IRS called<a href="https://www.irs.gov/about-irs/strategic-plan/direct-file" role="link" onclick="javascript:window.open('https://www.irs.gov/about-irs/strategic-plan/direct-file', '_blank', 'noopener'); return false;"> Direct File</a>.</p>

Over the next several weeks the Direct File pilot will be ramping up in the states where it’s being offered: Arizona, California, Florida, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming.
<p>Available in both English and Spanish, the new software pilot is starting small and will only be available to people with simple taxes who file with only limited types of incomes, credits, and deductions. While the Direct File tool won’t be available to everyone right away, it’s a crucial step toward unrigging our economy and protecting people’s pocketbooks.</p>

While there has technically been a Free File program at the IRS for decades, it has not lived up to its promise.

<hr class="break" />
<p />
<p>Buoyed by<a href="https://www.cnn.com/2024/01/25/politics/irs-direct-file-pilot/index.html" role="link" onclick="javascript:window.open('https://www.cnn.com/2024/01/25/politics/irs-direct-file-pilot/index.html', '_blank', 'noopener'); return false;"> funding the IRS received</a> though the Inflation Reduction Act, the Direct File pilot is another example of the Biden administration’s commitment to tackle junk fees that chip away at people’s economic wellbeing and to foster a government that better serves the American people.</p>
<p>Direct File is also a recognition that struggling families shouldn’t have to pay money they can’t afford just to do their civic duty. The tool aims to make it easier for folks to get the refund they’re owed and to address the problem of<a href="https://economicsecurityproject.org/wp-content/uploads/Free-and-simplified-filing-would-help-families-of-color-access-tax-benefits-1.pdf" role="link" onclick="javascript:window.open('https://economicsecurityproject.org/wp-content/uploads/Free-and-simplified-filing-would-help-families-of-color-access-tax-benefits-1.pdf', '_blank', 'noopener'); return false;"> one in five eligible recipients</a> of the Earned Income Tax Credit not claiming it.</p>
<p>While there has technically been a<a href="https://www.irs.gov/filing/free-file-do-your-federal-taxes-for-free" role="link" onclick="javascript:window.open('https://www.irs.gov/filing/free-file-do-your-federal-taxes-for-free', '_blank', 'noopener'); return false;"> Free File</a> program at the IRS for decades, it has not lived up to its promise. Only a tiny percentage of eligible filers —<a href="https://www.npr.org/2024/01/29/1227465233/the-irs-is-piloting-new-software-that-could-let-you-file-your-taxes-for-free" role="link" onclick="javascript:window.open('https://www.npr.org/2024/01/29/1227465233/the-irs-is-piloting-new-software-that-could-let-you-file-your-taxes-for-free', '_blank', 'noopener'); return false;"> about 2 percent</a> — use it. And there was a high-profile data breach where corporate partners in the program<a href="https://apnews.com/article/irs-taxpayer-tax-preparation-meta-congress-9315cfca7a0942ab89f765d183fbf822" role="link" onclick="javascript:window.open('https://apnews.com/article/irs-taxpayer-tax-preparation-meta-congress-9315cfca7a0942ab89f765d183fbf822', '_blank', 'noopener'); return false;"> shared sensitive tax information</a> with Meta (formerly called Facebook) and Google.</p>
<p>Unsurprisingly, Intuit, the parent company of TurboTax, has not been taking this budding threat to its<a href="https://www.marketwatch.com/story/intuits-stock-is-on-the-rise-after-revenue-earnings-beats-f609da1f" role="link" onclick="javascript:window.open('https://www.marketwatch.com/story/intuits-stock-is-on-the-rise-after-revenue-earnings-beats-f609da1f', '_blank', 'noopener'); return false;"> behemoth earnings</a> laying down. It’s<a href="https://substack.perfectunion.us/p/turbotaxs-intuit-spent-record-amount" role="link" onclick="javascript:window.open('https://substack.perfectunion.us/p/turbotaxs-intuit-spent-record-amount', '_blank', 'noopener'); return false;"> poured a record amount</a> into its lobbying,<a href="https://www.opensecrets.org/news/2024/02/turbotax-maker-intuit-spent-millions-in-record-lobbying-blitz-amid-threats-to-tax-prep-industry" role="link" onclick="javascript:window.open('https://www.opensecrets.org/news/2024/02/turbotax-maker-intuit-spent-millions-in-record-lobbying-blitz-amid-threats-to-tax-prep-industry', '_blank', 'noopener'); return false;"> almost a million dollars</a> in just the past three months.</p>
<p>But it’s going to take more than lobbying and a<a href="https://x.com/BCAppelbaum/status/1756845956274766304?s=20" role="link" onclick="javascript:window.open('https://x.com/BCAppelbaum/status/1756845956274766304?s=20', '_blank', 'noopener'); return false;"> Super Bowl ad</a> to revive Intuit’s tarnished image.</p>
<p />
<hr class="break" />
<div class="smquote" style="width:70%;margin:0 100px 0 100px;">
This St. Patrick’s Day, some lucky filers will find a pot of gold under the rainbow — around $150 or more on average back in their pockets that they didn’t have to give to a greedy corporation just to use software.
</div>
<hr class="break" />
<p />
<p>Intuit entered into a<a href="https://www.attorneygeneral.gov/taking-action/attorney-general-henry-announces-141-million-settlement-for-millions-of-americans-decieved-by-turbotax-owner-intuit/" role="link" onclick="javascript:window.open('https://www.attorneygeneral.gov/taking-action/attorney-general-henry-announces-141-million-settlement-for-millions-of-americans-decieved-by-turbotax-owner-intuit/', '_blank', 'noopener'); return false;"> $141 million settlement</a> last year to resolve claims that it steered low-income customers to paid products when they were eligible to use free services. And the Federal Trade Commission<a href="https://www.ftc.gov/business-guidance/blog/2024/01/closer-look-ftcs-ruling-intuits-free-claims-deceived-consumers" role="link" onclick="javascript:window.open('https://www.ftc.gov/business-guidance/blog/2024/01/closer-look-ftcs-ruling-intuits-free-claims-deceived-consumers', '_blank', 'noopener'); return false;"> ruled</a> in January that the company’s advertising about free tax prep was deceptive.</p>
<p>The Direct File tool is expected to be live to the public in those 12 states in early to mid-March. That means that this St. Patrick’s Day, some lucky filers will find a pot of gold under the rainbow — around $150 or more on average back in their pockets that they didn’t have to give to a greedy corporation just to use software to help them file their taxes online.</p>
<p>Direct File is the first brick in the road to return-free filing that many of our international peers enjoy, where they simply approve their pre-calculated return prepared by the government.</p>
<p>Like a garden, though, Direct File will only flourish with care and attention. Let’s make sure it doesn’t die on the vine! Help spread the word, check<a href="https://directfile.irs.gov/" role="link" onclick="javascript:window.open('https://directfile.irs.gov/', '_blank', 'noopener'); return false;"> your eligibility</a> at directfile.irs.gov, and visit<a href="https://act.citizen.org/page/62332/petition/1" role="link" onclick="javascript:window.open('https://act.citizen.org/page/62332/petition/1', '_blank', 'noopener'); return false;"> act.citizen.org/page/62332/petition/</a> to get reminded when it’s go time for Direct File in your state.</p>

<b>StatePoint</b> - DIY activities, like swapping a lighting fixture or painting your living room, are popular ways to accomplish your to-do list. But as anyone who has tackled too big of a project knows, some jobs are best left to the professionals. That includes your dental health.
<p />
<img alt="" border="0" data-original-height="570" data-original-width="800" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhN8jd4spTwIlQewlSLICxVlgEozhRuz6Q89YSgOUdZt2F8EjkHAMdELUDbgg_FoMhyLt9aDN86GUe22_mzqCqLLDpt3fC93abuxy04a1RGEi23e2GYTPfSACMvfy7K7FtyhcEIWeIHqz4RXiVQcnuRqJG3ekL1YYGZLRp-V1SNhF0nHjxG7FNctDVVeX4/s1600/24pexels-dentist_GF.jpg" class="artphoto" />

<p />
You may have already seen DIY dentistry products, such as at-home whitening kits, mouthguards or teeth aligners. These often guarantee fast, easy ways to solve your oral health issues without the involvement of a dentist or an orthodontist (a dentist who specializes in the bite and alignment of your teeth).
<p />
“Dental products are never one-size-fits-all,” said American Dental Association (ADA) president, Linda Edgar, D.D.S. “No two mouths are alike, which is why it’s important to work directly with an ADA dentist or orthodontist to determine the precise care that your body needs.”
<p />
Skipping the dentist chair and “fixing” your teeth at home can lead to bigger, sometimes irreversible problems. For some people with more complex dental health needs, using an at-home aligner may cause bone loss, lost teeth, receding gums, bite problems, jaw pain and other damaging and permanent issues. You might also not be aware of other dental issues that should be addressed before you start moving teeth.
<p />
“Patients are understandably drawn to these DIY treatments because they might struggle to fit a dentist appointment into their schedule or they assume at-home care will cost less,” Dr. Edgar said. “But when these products cause major issues, patients end up spending more time and more money trying to reverse that damage. Instead, trained ADA dentists and orthodontists can talk through patients’ budget concerns and offer them a wider variety of dependable, approved treatment options.”
<p />
In between dental checkups, look for products with the ADA Seal of Acceptance. These have been independently evaluated by experts and recognized to be both safe and effective. When you choose one of these options, you can be assured that your care is backed by evidence-based research and generations of scientific knowledge.
<p />
Whether it’s teeth grinding or a toothache, talk to your dentist before trying to solve your dental problems on your own. A dentist can help you find a personalized treatment plan that’s right for you, monitor your progress and make recommendations on how to manage your oral health outside of the office.
<p />

<p />
“The ADA’s primary concerns with DIY dentistry are, and always have been, patient safety and quality care,” Dr. Edgar said. “Our job as dentists is to put patient health first.”

<div class="softnews">
<b>Family Features</b> - While many Americans agree Conventional CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) or Hands-Only CPR (HOCPR) significantly improve a person's <a href="https://www.oursentinel.com/2021/12/tips-for-healthy-heart-during-holidays.html" title="Tips for a healthy heart">chance of survival</a> from cardiac arrest, less than half are confident they can perform either Conventional CPR or HOCPR in an emergency.

Black or Hispanic adults who experience cardiac arrest outside a hospital setting are substantially less likely to receive lifesaving care from a bystander. In spite of these survey results, the American Heart Association is working to change this by empowering members of these communities to learn lifesaving CPR, and a growing segment of respondents are willing to act in an emergency.
<p />
The American Heart Association's 2023 survey also revealed that as a result of the organization's efforts to change attitudes about <a href="https://www.oursentinel.com/2023/01/cpr-its-critical-skill-for-young-people.html" title="CPR is a critical skill for young people to learn">performing CPR</a>, which can lead to lifesaving results, more than half of African Americans said they would be willing to perform CPR in an emergency compared to 37% two years ago. Additionally, Hispanic and Latino respondents are more confident in their abilities to perform CPR.
<p />
Committed to turning a nation of bystanders into lifesavers, the American Heart Association's multiyear initiative, Nation of Lifesavers, helps teens and adults learn how to perform CPR and use an automated external defibrillator (AED); share that knowledge with <a href="https://www.oursentinel.com/2022/11/get-in-shape-before-hunting-season.html">friends</a> and family; and engage employers, policymakers, philanthropists and others to create support for a nation of lifesavers.
<p />
"Each of us has the power in our own hands to respond to a sudden cardiac arrest," said Anezi Uzendu, M.D., American Heart Association expert volunteer. "We simply need to know what to do and have the confidence to act."
<p />
The long-term goal: to ensure that in the face of a cardiac emergency, anyone, anywhere is prepared and empowered to perform CPR and become a vital link in the chain of survival, aiming to double the survival rate of cardiac arrest victims by 2030. It takes just 90 seconds to learn how to save a life using HOCPR, which can be equally as effective as traditional CPR in the first few minutes of cardiac arrest.
<p />
Nationally supported by the Elevance Health Foundation, the American Heart Association's HOCPR campaign is focused on chest compression-only CPR. If a teen or adult suddenly collapses due to a cardiac event, you can take two steps to save a life: immediately call emergency services and use these tips to begin performing HOCPR.
<p />
1. Position yourself directly over the victim.<br />
2. Put the heel of one hand in the center of the chest and put your other hand on top of the first.<br />
3. Push hard and fast in the center of the chest at a rate of 100-120 beats per minute, which is about the same tempo as the song "Stayin' Alive" by the Bee Gees, and at a depth of approximately 2 inches.<br />
4. Continue compressions and use an AED, if available, until emergency help arrives.<br />
<p />

<p>If you, like me, grew up in the 1980s and 1990s, you may have come across the classic refrigerator magnet, “Teenagers, leave home now while you still know everything.”</p>
<p>Perhaps you know a teen, or maybe you were a teen, like this: pop-star energy, a little too confident in your opinions, a little too certain that no one could know what you know. Adolescence is the period of life when people transform from children into adults. To handle the transition successfully, people need to shed parental dependencies and <a href="https://doi.org/10.1016/j.dr.2012.01.001">become more autonomous and independent</a>. So it makes sense that teens think – or at least act like – they know everything.</p>
<p>I’m a <a href="https://scholar.google.com/citations?view_op=search_authors&mauthors=tenelle+porter&hl=en&oi=ao">scholar</a> of how people, at any stage of life, handle the fact that they do not actually know everything.</p>
<p>My research has examined what happens to young people who, amid the emotional, social and hormonal storms of adolescence, find themselves relatively willing to acknowledge that their knowledge and perspective are actually limited. This is an attribute scholars like me call “intellectual humility,” which describes a person’s recognition that there are gaps in what they know and that those gaps make their beliefs and opinions fallible.</p>
<p>My colleagues and I wondered whether anything was different about teens who recognize this fallibility – who are intellectually humble – and those who don’t. We really weren’t sure, because the answer is not obvious. On one hand, being aware of their own ignorance and fallibility might be an asset for teenagers by making them more <a href="https://doi.org/10.1038/s44159-022-00081-9">teachable and open-minded</a>, and perhaps even <a href="https://doi.org/10.1007/s13164-023-00679-9">more likable</a>. On the other hand, perhaps awareness of their ignorance could be so overwhelming that it makes them feel defeated and helpless, essentially shooting young people in the foot before they have even gotten off the starting line of their adult life. </p>
<p>We wondered whether, and to what extent, intellectual humility is beneficial for youth and to what extent it might actually be harmful.</p>
<h2>Anticipating failure</h2>
<p><a href="https://doi.org/10.1016/j.lindif.2020.101888">In a series of studies</a> that collectively enrolled over 1,000 participants, high school students rated themselves on the degree to which they agreed with statements like “I acknowledge when someone knows more than me about a subject” and “I question my own opinions, positions and viewpoints because they could be wrong” as indicators of intellectual humility. </p>
<p>We then asked students to imagine that they had failed a quiz in a new class and, critically, what they would do next. Students rated a series of possible responses to this setback, including more mastery-oriented responses, such as “study harder next time,” and more helpless responses, such as “avoid this subject in the future.”</p>
<p>The students who had rated higher in intellectual humility more strongly endorsed the mastery responses, showing that the intellectually humbler they were, the more they said they would try to learn the difficult material. The students’ degree of intellectual humility did not coincide with their helplessness ratings. In other words, the intellectually humbler students were not more defeated and helpless. Rather, they were more interested in improving.</p>

<hr class="break">
<h2>Actually encountering failure</h2>
<p>We wanted to know more, especially whether students’ hypothetical behavior would be the same as their actual behavior. Our next two studies addressed this question. </p>
<p>One study had three phases. We started by measuring adolescents’ intellectual humility with a self-reporting questionnaire like the one we’d used before. </p>
<p>Then we returned to their classrooms months after the questionnaire, on a day when the teacher returned an actual, graded unit test. As students saw their test feedback and grades, we asked them to rate different options for what they might do to prepare for the next test.</p>
<p>The intellectually humbler students endorsed items like “try to figure out things that confuse me” and “ask myself questions to make sure I understand the material” more strongly than the less intellectually humble students, regardless of whether they performed well or poorly on the test. </p>
<p>For the last phase of this study, we waited until the end of the school year and asked the teacher – who did not know students’ intellectual humility scores – to rate each student’s eagerness to learn. According to the teacher’s ratings, the intellectually humbler students took on learning with more gusto. </p>
<p>In the other study, with another group of students, we again gave them the questionnaire on intellectual humility. Then we asked them to complete a challenging puzzle that tapped into their actual persistence and challenge-seeking behavior. </p>
<p>The intellectually humbler students preferred challenging puzzles more than easy ones that they already knew how to do, spent longer trying to solve the challenging puzzles and made more attempts at solving puzzles even after they had failed than their less humble peers.</p>
<p><iframe id="fMYgX" class="tc-infographic-datawrapper" style="background-color:white;" src="https://datawrapper.dwcdn.net/fMYgX/1/" height="300px" width="104%" frameborder="20px"></iframe></p>
<h2>The role of mindset</h2>
<p>Collectively, those studies gave us additional confidence that intellectually humbler students were more teachable and willing to work harder than their more defensive, less humble peers – not only by their own accounts but also according to a teacher and as measured by an actual behavioral task.</p>
<p>But we didn’t know whether the intellectual humility caused that openness to learning. We wanted to know if encouraging students to be more intellectually humble would actually make students more focused on learning and mastery and less likely to throw up their hands and surrender in the face of a challenge.</p>
<p>So we randomly assigned participants to read one of two articles, one about the benefits of being intellectually humble, the other about the benefits of being highly certain. These articles looked like they had been written for a popular media outlet, but they were actually written by us. </p>
<p>As a cover story, we asked for participants’ feedback on the article: Was it intelligible? Could a young person understand it? What was the main idea? </p>
<p>Next, we asked participants to do a second, ostensibly unrelated activity. We asked them to imagine specific objects and rotate them in their minds’ eyes. These were tricky problems, taken from dental school admissions exams, aimed at determining a person’s spatial visualization skills.</p>
<p>After they finished the problems, we told participants they had done well on some questions and failed others. This feedback was made up so that it would be consistent for every participant. Prior researchers have <a href="https://doi.org/10.1177/0146167207312960">used a similar procedure</a> because it is difficult for people to determine whether they had answered these questions correctly or not, making both success and failure feedback equally plausible.</p>
<p>Then we asked if they would be interested in taking a tutorial on the material they failed. The results were dramatic: Upon hearing that they failed a series of questions, 85% of those who had read the article about the benefits of intellectual humility chose to invest in learning more about the failed subject. But just 64% of those who had read about the benefits of certainty chose to learn more.</p>
<p>In all of these studies, intellectually humbler adolescents showed in a variety of ways and via a variety of different measures that, when they got something wrong, they cared about getting it right the next time. Rather than throw up their hands and declare themselves to be helpless in the face of ignorance, intellectually humbler students set to work on learning more. </p>
<p>Other researchers’ findings that corroborate these results show that young people higher in intellectual humility are <a href="https://doi.org/10.1080/17439760.2019.1579359">more motivated to learn</a> and <a href="https://doi.org/10.1016/j.lindif.2021.102012">earn higher grades</a>, in part because they are more open to corrective feedback.</p>
<p>We are continuing our research into how intellectual humility shapes teenagers’ lives and how parents, teachers and society can promote it. Some of our recent work has looked at how schools make it either <a href="https://doi.org/10.1016/j.cedpsych.2022.102081">easier</a> or <a href="https://doi.org/10.1037/mot0000289">harder</a> for young people to express intellectual humility. We also have questions about how much American parents, teachers and adolescents value intellectual humility. As with any research, we really don’t know what we’ll find, but we’re excited to learn.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. <b>StatePoint </b>- If you’re struggling with access to reliable and affordable wireless home internet, you’re not alone. In fact, more than 20% of Americans living in rural areas and nearly 30% of Americans living in Tribal lands lack internet access, compared to only 1.5% of those living in urban areas. To make matters worse, the average American shells out about $75 each month for internet service, with over a third saying that cost is one of the biggest hurdles in getting their hands on home internet.
<p />
As internet usage increases, the United States faces even more of a nationwide digital divide, but federal government agencies are stepping in to help bridge the gap. In December 2021, the FCC launched a $14 billion initiative to provide people across the United States with affordable internet access through the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP). Eligible participants can receive up to a $30 discount per month on fixed or wireless internet access, or up to $75 per month on Tribal lands.
<p />
So far, the program has provided discounted internet service to more than 20 million households across the country. Here’s how it works:
<p />
• Find out if you qualify through your household income and participation in government assisted programs by visiting fcc.gov/acp.
<p />
• If you qualify, apply for discounted service by visiting getinternet.gov/apply. If you’re unable to apply online, print the application or call (877) 384-2575 to have one mailed to your home address.
<p />
• Once approved, select an internet provider. Metro by T-Mobile is one provider helping bring awareness to the program. In fact, a recent study found that half of eligible households are unaware of the program’s existence or didn’t know anything about it. Metro is out to change that, offering 5G home internet for just $20 a month with Autopay for qualifying ACP households. It’s easy to sign up with no contracts, credit checks or hidden fees. New customers can visit their nearest Metro store to purchase the internet gateway and a Metro phone line to add home internet to their account. Visit metrobyt-mobile.com/acp to learn more about how Metro is helping to bridge the digital divide.
<p />
If you’re not eligible for ACP, there are other ways to save a few dollars when shopping around for home internet.
<p />
• Take Advantage of Free Trials: Some internet providers offer free trials or money-back guarantees to test out their internet in your home for a certain timeframe.
<p />
• Bundle Services: Check what other services you can bundle to save, like your phone plan, cable television and more.
<p />
• Autopay Discounts: Wireless companies often offer discounts for those accounts that sign up for autopay billing.
<p />
• Internet Connection Type: The type of internet you purchase matters. Fiber and traditional broadband connected through a cable in the wall tends to be more expensive than 5G wireless internet services that use a wireless connection.
<p />
Staying plugged into our increasingly digital world on your terms and budget is totally achievable! Get savvy with your shopping and cash in on initiatives and perks to keep your wallet happy while staying connected.

<h2>1. Why is Ramadan called Ramadan?</h2>
<p><a href="https://pluralism.org/ramadan-and-eid-al-fitr">Ramadan is the ninth month</a> of the Islamic lunar calendar and lasts either 29 or 30 days, depending on when the new crescent moon is, or should be, visible. </p>
<p>The Arabic term Ramadan <a href="https://books.google.com/books?id=hVpmIJAFVo0C">connotes intense heat</a>. It seems that in pre-Islamic Arabia, Ramadan was the name of a scorching hot summer month. In the Islamic calendar, however, the timing of Ramadan varies from year to year. This year <a href="https://www.islamicfinder.org/islamic-calendar">Ramadan will begin at sunset on March 11, give or take a day depending on when the new moon is sighted</a>. An Islamic year is roughly 11 days shorter than a Gregorian year.</p>

<h2>2. What is the significance of Ramadan?</h2>
<p>
Ramadan is a period of fasting and spiritual growth and is one of the five “pillars of Islam” – the others being the declaration of faith, daily prayer, alms-giving and the pilgrimage to Mecca. Able-bodied Muslims are expected to <a href="https://pluralism.org/islamic-practices">abstain</a> from eating, drinking and sexual relations from dawn to sunset each day of the month. Many practicing Muslims also perform additional prayers, especially at night, and attempt to recite the entire Quran. The prevailing belief among Muslims is that it was in the final 10 nights of Ramadan that the <a href="https://pluralism.org/i%E2%80%99tikaf">Quran was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad</a>.</p>
<h2>3. What is the connection between soul and body that the observance of Ramadan seeks to explain?</h2>
<p>The Quran states that fasting was prescribed for believers <a href="http://www.islamicity.org/quransearch/">so that they may be conscious of God</a>. By abstaining from things that people tend to take for granted (such as water), it is believed, one may be moved to reflect on the purpose of life and grow closer to the creator and sustainer of all existence. As such, engaging in wrongdoing effectively <a href="https://pluralism.org/ramadan-and-eid-al-fitr">undermines the fast</a>. Many Muslims also maintain that fasting allows them to get a feeling of poverty and this may foster feelings of empathy.</p>
<h2>4. Can Muslims skip fasting under certain conditions? If so, do they make up missed days?</h2>
<p>All those who are physically limited (for example, because of an illness or old age) are <a href="https://sop.washington.edu/wp-content/uploads/Ramadan-and-Medications.pdf">exempt from the obligation</a> to fast; the same is true for anyone who is traveling. Those who are able to do so are expected to make up the missed days at a later time. One could potentially make up all of the missed days in the month immediately following Ramadan, the month of Shawwal. Those unable to fast at all, if they are financially able, are <a href="https://www.islamicity.org/5331/islamic-legal-rules-of-fasting">expected to provide meals</a> to the needy as an alternative course of action.</p>
<h2>5. What is the significance of 29 or 30 days of fasting?</h2>
<p>By fasting over an extended period of time, practicing Muslims aim to <a href="http://aboutislam.net/shariah/refine-your-heart/advice/ramadan-training-spiritual-endurance">foster certain attitudes and values</a> that they would be able to cultivate over the course of an entire year. Ramadan is often likened to a <a href="http://www.srilankaguardian.org/2010/08/holy-month-of-ramadan-and-quran.html">spiritual training camp</a>. </p>
<p>Besides experiencing feelings of hunger and thirst, believers often <a href="http://doi.org/10.1080/07420520802397301">have to deal with fatigue</a> because of late-night prayers and pre-dawn meals. This is especially true during the final 10 nights of the month. In addition to being the period in which the Quran was believed to have been first revealed, this is a time when divine rewards are believed to be multiplied. Many Muslims will offer additional prayers during this period.</p>
<h2>6. Do Muslims celebrate the completion of Ramadan?</h2>
<p>The end of Ramadan marks the beginning of one of two major Islamic holidays <a href="https://books.google.com/books?id=J6JlAgAAQBAJ">Eid al-Fitr</a>, the “festival of the breaking of the fast.” On this day, many Muslims attend a religious service, visit relatives and friends and exchange gifts.</p>

In his State of the Union address, President Joe Biden referred to an American dilemma – the shrinking Snicker’s bar. He pointed out that his Snicker’s bar purchase had less or fewer Snickers. I’m not exactly sure what a Snickers is, nuts, chocolate, sugar, the content of the bar. Size matters, when you’re hungry. It’s just a bad thing when you stop at your local convenient store to buy a soda pop and you walk out with a Snicker’s bar that cost more but has less in the wrapper. Apparently, there must be less Fritos and Cheetos in the bags as well. This is a sad time in America.
<p />
I remember buying a large bottle of coke, a bag of chips and a pastry for 25 cents. Those were the days but they are long past.
<p />
It’s an epidemic of course. It’s not just candy bars and junk food. Check the size of your fast-food hamburgers and the cost. You are paying more for less. A hundred dollars doesn’t go very far at the grocery store. American families are having a difficult time putting food on the table. A mother who cooks for her family every day is having to stretch her budge more and more.
<p />
President Biden is concerned about the problem but it’s been a growing problem for three years. It’s not getting better When does he propose to fix the problem, after he is reelected? Why not now? Or, why not over the past three years? People are hurting today. Promises of a better life if he is reelected are not reassuring to many Americans.
<p />
The border crisis is our number one issue this election. It’s not a priority with President Biden. He’s had three years to be walking that border. He’s had three years to stop the invasion of illegals and gang members into our country. His recent photo op to the border is too little too late. Joe Biden stopped the progress of the border wall. He opened the gates wide to the illegals. The results are not positive. We have major cities on the verge of economic collapse. Public schools, housing and more are suffering. Mayors are pleading for help.
<p />
Recently, Biden submitted a Border Immigration Bill to Congress that has not been approved. The bill still allows for an average of 5000 people a day over seven days to come into the United States illegally before closing the border. Or, the one-day maximum number is 8,500 entries before the border is closed. This a larger number of people than some of our rural counties in America. Over the course of a year this would amount to a city the size of Indianapolis or larger coming into our country. This is not border security, but only a continuation of Biden’s insanity.
<p />
We do need to help Ukraine. Putin is not anyone’s friend. Trump made a stupid statement about Putin attacking non-supportive NATO countries. However, the border security and Ukraine expenditures should be separate bills. If we don’t tightly secure our border our children are going to have a scary place to grow up. Sadly, we may already be in that place.
