IHSA announces 2024-25 officials of the year

BLOOMINGTON - The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) announced its annual list of Officials of the Year for the 2024-25 season across the 22 IHSA athletic events.

"Officials are vital to the experience of high school student-athletes in Illinois, and we are proud to be able to honor these outstanding individuals as IHSA Officials of the Year," said IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson. "High school sports do not exist without them and the thousands of officials around the state who preside over contests and meets every day."

To be considered for this honor, an official must first be nominated by an Officials Association recognized by the IHSA or by an IHSA administrator. IHSA staff members then vote on the winners based on factors such as character, skill as an official, and levels worked in the IHSA State Series.

According to a survey conducted almost three years ago by the National Federation of High Schools, the average age of a sports official is over 50 years old. Officials across every sport make a significant difference in the lives of hundreds of high school and junior high athletes every year by administering the rules objectively, enforcing them with consistency and common sense.

"This award only recognizes a small percentage of our dedicated officials, but we know they are all worthy of our respect and admiration," Anderson added. "We understand they do not officiate for awards or recognition, but it remains a special tradition for the IHSA to honor them."

The award winners will be recognized at July's IHSA Officials Conference held in Normal on July 11-12.

Newest class of Illinois Hall of Fame football coaches announced

Monticello's Cully Welter looks for players to put in the game in the final minutes of the Sages' 2024 state title game against Montini. In addition to last year's Class 3A title game appearance, Welter, who was inducted in 2018, has led teams to IHSA state championships in 1998, 2001, 2002, and 2018 and state runner-up finishes in 2005 and 2006. He is only one of two Illinois high school football coaches to win state titles at two different schools. No area head coaches will be honored at this year's annual IHSFCA conference.

ROCHELLE - The Illinois High School Football Coaches Association announced its 2025 Hall of Fame class today. The honored coaches will be recognized on Saturday, March 29, at the I Hotel and Conference Center in Champaign.

While no coaches from the Champaign-Urbana area made this year's selection, Leonard Sementi, a longtime assistant for the Tuscola Warriors, will receive an award at the luncheon.

In addition to serving as the football team's defensive coordinator for more than 30 years, Sementi was the school's head softball coach for 23 seasons. In August, he was hired as the head softball coach for the Parkland College Cobras.

Eighteen coaches, split into five categories — active, career, assistants, deceased, and retired — are scheduled to be inducted at the annual event. The coaches were chosen based on their contributions to the football coaching profession and the impact they made within their programs.

Tickets are $40 and can be purchased through the association's official website, ihsfca.com. Illinois Fighting Illini football coach Bret Bielema will be the keynote speaker for the noon luncheon.

Illinois linebacker named to Allstate Wuerffel Trophy watch list

SNS - In the fast-paced world of college football, it's easy to get lost in the shuffle of stats, scores, and standout plays. Last week, University of Illinois linebacker Kenenna Odeluga was named to the 2024 watch list for the Allstate Wuerffel Trophy by the Wuerffel Foundation and the National College Football Awards Association (NCFAA) on Thursday. A rising star, he has made a name for himself as a force both in the game and in the community, embodying the true spirit of a student-athlete.

In 2024, he was nominated for the prestigious Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, a testament to their dedication beyond the gridiron. This honor recognizes players who have made a significant impact in their communities, and Odeluga has certainly earned it. A two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection (2022 and 2023), he has consistently excelled in the classroom, balancing the demands of academics and athletics.

Last summer, Odeluga embarked on a mission trip to Africa, an experience that left an indelible mark. There, he not only contributed to various service projects but also connected with local communities, gaining a deeper understanding of global issues and the power of compassion.

Back home, Odeluga has been a familiar face at the Carle Foundation Hospital, where he visited children battling illnesses, spreading joy and offering support to families in need. His community service extends to helping build a garden at the Salvation Army, a project aimed at providing fresh produce to those in need. He also worked with DREAAM, engaging with kids during the organization's community service events and helping to create a positive and uplifting environment.

In January 2024, Odeluga attended the Black Student Athlete Summit in Los Angeles, where he connected with professionals and athletic faculty members from across the nation. This gathering, which brought together 1,500 student-athletes, offered a unique opportunity for networking and personal growth.

As a member of the Illinois Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), Odeluga serves as a representative for the football program. In this role, they've been actively involved in various athletics community initiatives, advocating for their peers and helping to shape the future of Illinois athletics.

Odeluga has proven time and time again that he is more than just a standout player on the field. As a leader and a compassionate individual, he is using his education and knowledge to make a difference.
