Area football players to play in all-star football game June 21

Record-setting Taylor, power back Boyd-Meents headline Shrine Game rosters.

ST. JOSEPH - Two of central Illinois’ top high school football talents and other members from the Illini Prairie Conference will join an elite group of players from across the state for one final game in their prep careers.

Coy Taylor of St. Joseph-Ogden and Robert Boyd-Meents of Paxton-Buckley-Loda will take the field June 21 at Tucci Stadium in Bloomington for the 51st Annual Illinois High School Shrine Game. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m., with pregame ceremonies beginning at 10 a.m. Tickets are $10 and available at the gate.

LEFT: PBL's Robert Boyd-Meents runs the ball against the Spartans on the same night. Boyd-Meents averaged 5.1 yards per carry and finished the game with 70 all-purpose yards against a stout Spartan defense.

This all-star event, sponsored by the Illinois Coaches Association and the Shriners of Illinois, benefits Shriners Hospitals for Children, with all proceeds supporting pediatric specialty care. Last year’s game raised nearly $13,000 for the cause.

Taylor, who will continue his football career at DuPage College, leaves behind a record-setting legacy. The 5-foot-11, 170-pound receiver holds the IHSA all-time career receptions record with 259 catches, surpassing the previous mark held by Marist’s Nic Weishar. Taylor also ranks fourth in state history in career receiving yards with 3,658 and became only the second receiver in Illinois history to post three consecutive 1,000-yard seasons. His senior year included 83 catches for 1,045 yards, highlighted by a postseason performance in which he had seven receptions against Unity in his final game.

Boyd-Meents, meanwhile, anchored PBL’s offense for three seasons. The 5-foot-11, 210-pound running back amassed 4,020 total yards over 31 varsity games, averaging 129 yards per contest. In addition to his ground attack, he hauled in 39 receptions for 747 yards, helping the Panthers reach the playoffs each of the last three seasons.

The Blue Team will feature both Taylor and Boyd-Meents alongside Milford’s Caleb Clutteur, an 8-man football tight end. They’ll be guided by one of their own: St. Joseph-Ogden head coach Shawn Skinner, who joins the Blue Team coaching staff.

Skinner brings a resume full of recent success. He led the Spartans to a 10-1 finish in 2024, including a perfect 8-0 record in Illini Prairie Conference play. Over the past three seasons, Skinner’s teams have gone 25-5 and made deep playoff runs, including a narrow second-round postseason loss last fall to Roxana. In an interesting twist, Skinner will coach alongside Roxana head coach Wade Devries, whose team ended SJO’s 2023 season with a last-minute defensive stand on a 2-point conversion attempt.

The Red Team will also include a solid contingent of area athletes:

  • George Rouse, QB, Champaign Central
  • Carter Foran, WR, Monticello
  • Mason High, NT, Monticello
  • Evan Parish, ILB, Bismarck-Henning-Rossville-Alvin
  • Matt Suaava, OL (G), Paxton-Buckley-Loda
  • Ryker Grauer, ILB, Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley
  • Matt Allen, DE, Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley

Monticello's Carter Foran takes a handoff from quarterback Ike Young (left) during their semifinal game against Unity. He will be joined at the All-Star game with teammate Mason High. The two seniors saw action in the Class 3A championship game against Montini after defeating the Rockets last November.

Now in its fifth decade, the Shrine Game continues to celebrate Illinois’ football tradition while raising awareness and support for young patients. This year’s banquet speaker will be Jared Williamson, newly appointed head coach at Illinois Wesleyan University, and a former Shrine Game MVP in his home state of Alaska.

Spartans shut out Unity, finish Illini Prairie season undefeated

SJO defeats Unity 10-0 on the road to clinch the Illini Prairie Conference title behind Pruemer’s shutout and Houchens’ 3-run homer.

TOLONO — St. Joseph-Ogden wrapped up a dominant Illini Prairie Conference season with an emphatic 10-0 shutout victory over rival Unity on Thursday, capping off a perfect run through league play.

Spartan pitcher winds up for a pitch against Westville on April 30. The junior hurler picked the win against Unity on Thursday.

The Spartans (27-2) controlled the game from the opening inning and never let up, scoring in four of six innings and leaning on a sharp pitching performance from Asher Pruemer to keep the Rockets (14-10) scoreless on their home field. The win clinched the conference title outright and extended SJO’s winning streak with just days remaining in the regular season.

Pruemer was in command throughout, scattering just two hits while striking out four in a six-inning complete game. The right-hander walked one and faced minimal traffic, thanks in part to clean defense and early run support.

SJO got on the board quickly in the first. After Will Haley drew a walk in his opening at-bat, he scored the game’s first run on Trevor Ames’ two-out single to center. That opened the floodgates — Logan Rosenthal, Ames, and Nolan Earley also came around in the inning to give the Spartans a 4-0 lead.

Unity’s Brady Parr struggled with command, allowing six hits, nine total runs — four earned — and issuing six walks in just 2 2/3 innings.

The Spartans added two more runs in the second behind Kodey McKinney’s sharp single down the right field line, extending the lead to 6-0. But the big blow came in the bottom of the third, when Bryson Houchens crushed a three-run homer to left, scoring Rosenthal and Pruemer to put SJO up 9-0.

McKinney, who went 3-for-3 with two RBIs, drove in the final run in the sixth, plating pinch runner Dalton York to end the game via run rule.

Spartans' Bryson Houchens loads for swing on Normal U-High pitch last month. He has hit home runs in last three outtings for SJO.

Houchens finished with three RBIs on the homer, and also scored twice. Rosenthal and Ames also crossed the plate twice apiece as the Spartans combined for nine hits and seven walks in the contest.

Unity’s lone offensive highlights came from Nolan Remole and Coleton Langendorf, who each recorded one hit, but the Rockets couldn’t generate sustained pressure against Pruemer.

St. Joseph-Ogden now turns its attention to a nonconference home matchup against Reed-Custer on Saturday as the Spartans continue to build momentum for the postseason.

Unity focuses on conference title showdown at St. Joseph-Ogden after loss to Danville

TOLONO - In a hard-fought battle at the Rocket Center, the Unity Rockets (21-7) fell 76-69 to the Danville Vikings (8-17) in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday. Despite a strong first-half performance, Unity couldn't hold off Danville’s late surge, fueled by a dominant fourth quarter from CI Dye. The senior guard finished with 21 points—18 in the second half—including 11 in the final period to lead the Vikings’ 23-14 run.

Unity Athletics Dye wasn’t the only standout for Danville, as Jerry Reed III added 17 points and went a perfect 2-for-2 from the free-throw line, while Javaughn Robinson contributed 16 points, making all four of his free throws.

Unity controlled much of the game, taking a 38-32 halftime lead after hitting all nine of their second-quarter free throws. They entered the fourth quarter ahead 55-53 but couldn’t maintain their momentum. The Rockets shot well from the line overall, finishing 17-for-19. Brayden Henry led the way with a perfect 5-for-5 performance, and Colton Langendorf went 4-for-4. Overall, the Rockets were 17-for-19 from the line.

Dane Eisenmenger led Unity with a team-high 17 points, Henry finished with 13 points, and Langendorf chipped 10 points to lead the team's scoring effort in the loss.

With the loss behind them, the Rockets now turn their focus to a critical road matchup against St. Joseph-Ogden (18-7) tonight at 7 p.m. With an undefeated Illini Prairie Conference record on the line, a Unity win would secure them the outright conference championship. A loss, however, would create a potential tie for the title with the Spartans, who sit at 6-1 in IPC play.

The Rockets have navigated a challenging schedule this season leading up to this game, squaring off against larger programs and top-ranked teams, including three area Big 12 teams: Danville, Centennial, and Central, along with Tuetopolis and Lincoln-Way East. Playing away shouldn't pose a significant challenge for Unity, boasting an impressive 9-1 record on the road this season.

Parker Fitch’s 27 points lead St. Joseph-Ogden past Eagles

RANTOUL - Parker Fitch had a career night, scoring 27 points in his 29-minute appearance for St. Joseph-Ogden in the team's road game against the Eagles (13-14). The junior went 7-for-7 from the free-throw line and finished 6-for-11 from three-point range in SJO's 77-55 Illini Prairie victory on Tuesday.

St. Joseph-Ogden Basketball
Senior Tanner Siems recorded a double-double, scoring 19 points and dominating the paint with 14 of the Spartans' 32 rebounds. Starting guard Coy Taylor rounded out the top three scorers with 10 points, five rebounds and two assists, helping secure SJO's 18th win of the season and ending a two-game skid.

The win improved St. Joseph-Ogden to 6-1 in the Illini Prairie Conference, setting up a dramatic matchup Friday night at home against Unity with conference title implications. The Rockets are the only undefeated team in the conference at 7-0. The forecasted freezing rain could be a factor, but if conditions hold, it promises to be an exciting night of high school basketball on Valentine's Day.
