Madigan wins back-to-back titles at Labor Day Tournament

Hunter Madigan defended his singles crown while teaming with Sohum Gurrapu for the doubles title at the Champaign Labor Day Tennis Tournament.

CHAMPAIGN - For the second straight year, Hunter Madigan left no doubt about his place at the top of the Champaign Park District Labor Day Tournament. The top-seeded Madigan claimed the men’s open singles title with a run that ended in a championship victory over 15-year-old Sohum Gurrapu, a sophomore at Champaign Central, in his first appearance in the open division title match.

It took Madigan, a senior at St. Thomas More High School, three sets to defeat Gurrapu 3-6, 6-1, 1-0(5).

Madigan, who also qualified for the IHSA Tennis State Finals in May, dominated early-round matches. He opened with a 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Binghong Chen, then rolled past Joe Settelmyer 6-1, 6-0 in the quarterfinals. After edging David Diep in a tiebreak, Madigan stopped Daniel Canivez in a 6-0, 7-5 semifinal before earning his second consecutive title.

Gurrapu, meanwhile, made his way to the final with a breakout performance. He began with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Lang Liu before defeating former Champaign Centennial standout Daniel O’Brien, 6-3, 6-2. In the semifinal, Gurrapu held off Alejandro Gomez, a high school state finalist, in a tightly contested 7-5, 6-4 match to secure his spot opposite Madigan.

In the singles final, Madigan’s experience and steady play proved decisive against Gurrapu, who nonetheless established himself as a rising talent in the area’s tennis scene.

"Playing against him in singles is tough," Gurrapu said. "It went pretty well the first set. I was hitting pretty well, hitting some winners."

He pointed out that the second set was different story.

"In the second set, Hunter picked up his level and I think I kind of lowered mine," he said recapping the title match drama. "It was still a good tournament overall."

The tournament concluded with the men’s open doubles championship, where Madigan and Gurrapu joined forces. Facing veteran duo Sam Ryu and Lino Jo, the high school players showed poise in a straight-set victory, 6-4, 6-4, completing a memorable tournament sweep.

Madigan said Gurrapu is a fun partner to play with. After all, the pair have shared a friendship tempered by more than a half of decade of competition.

"The way he plays just works really with me."

Gurrapu sang praises for his partner.

"His serves are amazing. I mean his kick serve just make it too easy for me at the net," he said. "Playing singles against him is tough. I hate playing against it (the kick serve). In doubles, it's just amazing, especially when he is your partner."

State-Bound: Local tennis players ready for IHSA Finals this weekend

St. Thomas More’s Hunter Madigan wins sectional title; leads local field to IHSA state tennis finals.

St. Thomas More tennis star Hunter Madigan — St. Thomas More's Hunter Madigan plays in last year's park district Labor Day tournament. The junior won last weekend' sectional title and heads to the IHSA state tournament this weekend to face the best players in Illinois.

CHAMPAIGN - Three singles players and three area doubles teams are set to represent the Champaign-Urbana area at the IHSA Boys Tennis State Finals, which begin Thursday across the Chicago suburbs.

St. Thomas More junior Hunter Madigan headlines the local contingent after capturing the Class 1A sectional singles title last weekend at Centennial High School. Madigan cruised through the bracket, dropping just two games in three straight-set victories. He opened with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Luke Abadeer of Cornerstone Christian Academy, then handled Urbana University's Swapnil Kumar 6-2, 6-0 in the semifinals.

In the championship match, Madigan faced University High’s Jameson LaFave in a highly anticipated battle between two of the area’s top four singles players. Madigan prevailed 6-3, 6-1 to claim the sectional crown.

"My opponent played very well," LaFave said recounting the championship match. "Hunter Madigan hit some great shots, stayed consistent, and ran me out of the match."

Despite the loss, LaFave showed maturity beyond his years after the loss.

"It was a good fight in the opening set. He was just the better player that day. It was a tough loss," he said. "You got to learn from them and move on to state."

LaFave, a freshman in his first varsity season, still secured a state berth along with three U-High teammates. Senior Robert Gao and junior Kyle Fan qualified for the doubles draw, while Kumar advanced with a third-place singles finish.

Madigan will open state play against Dunlap's Harmin Patel. LaFave, seeded No. 15 in the 1A bracket, draws Brother Rice freshman Nathan Miller. Kumar faces Andrew Mumford of Marmion Academy in the first round, while Gao and Fan will take on Wauconda's Sean Lenhart and Marshawn Gallego.

Chargers' doubles team joins area players at state

Centennial seniors Tyler Luchinski and Ryder Perry also punched their ticket to state, placing second in doubles at their home sectional. They begin the tournament against Althoff Catholic seniors Joe Hamilton and Braden Gasawski.

Three Maroons ready to battle for a podium spot

Central senior Abel Vines enters the tournament with momentum and a sparkling 29-1 record. Vines dominated the Springfield sectional without dropping a game in eight sets and opens his state run against Oswego East's Pranav Kannan.

Rounding the list of high school players heading to state are Central’s doubles team of Daniel Canivez and Sohum Gurrapu, who also secured a spot at state after winning the sectional title. They’ll face Minooka's Eli Chavez and Evan Lundeen, who finished third at the Lincoln-Way East sectional.

Six champions crowned at Champaign Labor Day tennis tournament

CHAMPAIGN - Hunter Madigan dropped just three sets in his four matches at this weekend's Champaign Park District Labor Day Tennis Tournament. Last year's Junior Boys 16-and-under champion, Madigan secured the Men's Open division title, besting former Centennial High School standout Tim O'Brien in a marathon 6-3, 1-6, 1-0(4) finish on Sunday afternoon.

Madigan finished his sophomore season at St. Thomas More with an 18-6 singles record, and went 2-2 at the Class 1A state tournament this spring. He survived the three-set showdown against O'Brien, who had given up just nine games in his first three matches, 5-7, 7-5, 1-0(5).

Madigan started his run through the adult bracket with a quick, double breadstick win over Youngjoo Jing, 6-1, 6-1. He advanced to the quarterfinals to face Charles Crawmer, who cruised past David Sale, 6-0, 6-0, in their second-round matchup.

Crawmer easily took the first set from the 17-year-old upstart, 6-2. The second set was a different story. Madigan changed his strategy and battled to a 5-5 tie before Crawmer retired.

Hyeonmin Jeong, who cruised through his first two matches with double bagels, was the next victim to fall at the hands of the youthful Madigan. In the three USTA-sanctioned tournaments he played earlier this summer, Jeong beat seven of the nine opponents he faced and won the title at the Outdoor Summer Extravaganza @ JTCC. Unfortunately, Madigan proved to be too much, taking both sets, 6-4, 6-0.

Meanwhile, Jason Zumwalt and Shaun Peterson reprised their winning doubles duo to claim the Men's Open Doubles title in an all-Charger affair. Zumwalt, the boys head coach at Centennial High School, and his assistant, Peterson, took on brothers Tim and Daniel O'Brien, both former players at the school, in the final match of the tournament.

In a sport where youth and agility are clear advantages, Zumwalt and Peterson, senior to the O'Briens in combined age, secured the title with a 7-5, 6-1 victory.

In the past, championship and consolation bracket winners received trophies for their efforts. This year's champions received a swag bag filled with tennis accessories.

"Trophies are getting expensive," said tournament director Yuri Sohn, who is also the head tennis professional at Dodds Tennis Center in Champaign. "We wanted to try something different this year."

Inside the branded racquet bag given to division champions was a tournament T-shirt, racquet overgrips, a water bottle, ink pens, and racquet dampeners.

Labor Day tennis tournament crowns champions

CHAMPAIGN - It was a hot holiday weekend of fun at Lindsey Courts for area tennis players. Five singles players and five doubles teams earned titles at the 2023 Labor Day Tennis Tournament sponsored by the Champaign Park District.

Out of a field of 12 area recreational players, Alejandro Gomez, from Savoy, defeated Young Kim, Champaign in straight sets 6-4, 6-0, to take the Men's Open title.

The Junior Boys 16s title went to Hunter Madigan after squaring off with Mahomet's Nolan Kogut in the title match. Undefeated in United States Tennis Association play this year at 4-0, Kogut, was moved up from the 14-year-old division. He was unable to take a game from his older opponent from Champaign, losing, 6-0, 6-0. Entering the tournament with an impressive USTA record himself, Madigan is 16-3 playing singles.

In doubles competition, Jason Zumwalt & Shaun Peterson won the Men’s Open Doubles Final. Zumwalt, the head boys' tennis coach at Centennial High School, and Peterson, an Urbana native and former teaching pro at Atkins Tennis Center were a formidable pair, cruising past Hunter Antonisse & Alejandro Gomez, 6-2, 6-1.
