Why hundreds of people in the U.S. are sent to the emergency room each year
OSF Healthcare

"These short, metal brushes that you clean your grill with," Brian Curtis, M.D., vice president of the Clinical Specialty Services at OSF HealthCare says. "There are about 150-200 cases a year that occur in the United States. They may be underreported, but those are the ones that we know about." While barbecues over an outdoor grill are a great way for people to come together and enjoy a meal, Dr. Curtis says it could be an extremely painful experience if you end up swallowing a bristle from a wire brush. "The bristles can become embedded in your tongue. They can be embedded in the back of your throat, esophagus, stomach, and small intestine," Dr. Curtis says. "They can cause perforations, because it’s like swallowing a small needle. There are people every year that have surgeries trying to find these small objects because they are very tiny." So how can you keep your food on the grill from getting an unwanted extra ingredient? Dr. Curtis says it’s all about preparation. "You can use aluminum foil. Some people use nylon (scrapers)," Dr. Curtis says. "I just use a wool brush on mine. If you don’t want to go away from the wire brush, then you really have to inspect your grill very closely to make sure there’s nothing stuck on it." Dr. Curtis says if you believe you’ve swallowed a wire brush bristle, you need to be evaluated immediately.

Recipe: Grilled lemon chicken

Grilled Chicken with Lemon
Ingredients:Instructions: Preheat the oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit. In a large shallow baking dish, whisk together the juice and zest of 2 lemons, 1/2 cup olive oil, 6 cloves chopped garlic, 5 sprigs of rosemary, 1 teaspoon of kosher salt and plenty of coarse black pepper. Add 4 large chicken thighs to the mixture, toss to coat and let the chicken rest for 45 minutes at room temperature. Before cooking, be sure the chicken thighs are skin-side up. Cut the remaining zested lemons into halves or quarters, and nestle them among the chicken. Add a final grind of black pepper on top. Bake at 425 degrees Fahrenheit for 40 minutes or until the juices run clear. If you would like extra browning, briefly place the baking dish under the broiler. Food | Giving plasma? Boost iron levels with this marinated skirt steak recipe
Recipe to help boost iron levels, aid plasma donation recovery
Family Feature -- Chef Nate Appleman knows how important it is to serve healthy meals to your family - ones they actually want to eat. Before having his first child, he transformed his eating and exercise habits and lost 85 pounds to get on a healthier path. Now, he's cooking meals for his family, including 14-year-old Oliver who was diagnosed with Kawasaki Disease as a toddler - an inflammation of the blood vessels that can cause damage to coronary arteries - as a healthy lifestyle is important to help manage the disease. Since Oliver's diagnosis, Appleman made it his personal mission to create awareness of Kawasaki Disease and for the critical need for plasma donations that many people with the disease rely on for treatment, which is why he partnered with Abbott to bring attention to the need for plasma donations. Plasma is a powerful part of your blood that supports essential bodily functions. It's a lifeline for thousands of people who are immune-compromised and live with a variety of chronic and complex diseases. In fact, more than 125,000 Americans rely on medication made from plasma every day, according to the Plasma Protein Therapeutics Association (PPTA). The COVID-19 pandemic led to a serious shortage of plasma donors - average donations per center in the United States were down approximately 11% during the first few months of 2021 compared to the previous year, further deepening the nearly 20% decline in donations in 2020 compared to 2019, according to the PPTA. Donating plasma is a safe and relatively easy process. Since plasma is replaced in the body within about 24 hours, it can be donated up to twice per week. With a donation that typically takes between 1-3 hours, you can make a lasting impact by providing lifesaving medicine for patients like Oliver. It's a good idea to fuel up with iron-rich foods before and after donating, so Appleman created these fresh, nutritious recipes he loves to serve his family: Marinated Skirt Steak (see recipe below), Lemon Chicken with Roasted Red Onions and Potatoes, and Cheesy Frittata with Veggies. Recipe | Warm and wonderful, Pastrami-Spiced Veal Burgers

NAPSI - Whether you are feeding your family or entertaining guests, a delightful way to keep things cosy yet special during the cold weather season is with a delicious dish such as this one, made with Trusted Veal from Europe.
Pastrami-Spiced Veal Burgers
Yield: 6 servings2 cups Sauerkraut, rinsed and drained
3/4 cup Mayonnaise
1 oz Fresh breadcrumbs
4 oz Milk
2 tsp Salt
2 lbs Ground veal
2 tsp Black peppercorns
2 tsp Coriander seeds
1/2tsp Mustard seeds
1 tsp Sweet paprika
1 tsp Onion powder
1/2 tsp Garlic powder
1 tsp Brown sugar
1/2 cup Whole grain mustard
How to make it
Place the breadcrumbs, milk, and salt in a bowl and soak the breadcrumbs until softened. Mix the veal with the breadcrumb mixture and combine to form six patties. Toast the peppercorns, coriander, and mustard seeds in a dry pan. Let cool and grind them with the paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, and brown sugar. Coat the burgers with the spice mixture. Heat a grill on medium-high heat. Grill the burgers to desired doneness but at least 71°C (160°F) for food safety, adding a slice or two of cheese to each burger towards the end, to slightly melt. Spread the bottom of the bun with the mayonnaise, and top with whole grain mustard. Place the burger on the bottom, top with sauerkraut, and top with the bun. As easy to make as they are enjoyable to eat, one reason these burgers are better is that they're made with genuine European veal. Desired for its light color and delicate taste and texture, European veal has long been held in high regard among chefs around the world. What's more, European Union (EU) Legislation means high animal welfare standards are practised and enforced so consumers worldwide can feel confident about Trusted Veal from Europe, considered simply the best in taste and tradition. Fortunately, a wide selection of high-quality European veal is available throughout Canada. Opening statement, Spartans send message to conference opponents
MONTICELLO - Monday and Tuesday's weather forecast called for spotty rain for last Friday. By Wednesday, the updated forecast said rain after 9 p.m., and on Thursday it looked like St. Joseph-Ogden's season opener against Monticello would be rain-free. But no, said Mother Nature late Friday afternoon. A meandering storm system producing heavy rain—nearly 2 inches, according to a couple of Monticello residents—and frequent lightning forced the long-awaited game to Saturday. After receiving the opening kickoff, like the lightning storm that passed through Piatt and Champaign County Friday evening, the Spartans struck frequently, scoring five times in the first half before Monticello could reply. Thanks to solid offensive planning and execution, a balanced offensive effort, and four talented scoring weapons, SJO won the delayed season opener, 40-28. Junior Tim Blackburn-Kelley caught a screen pass on the opening play and sprinted 80 yards to the south end zone at Monticello's Wilkey Sports Complex. "I caught the pass and my guys were blocking for me," Blackburn-Kelley explained. "I saw green grass and I just had to get on my horse and go."
