The scholarships will provide significant financial support as the students continue their education in exercise science and mechanical engineering. Both were among a select group of students honored by SIU Carbondale Sept. 15.
CARBONDALE - Two students with ties to the Champaign-Urbana area are heading to Southern Illinois University Carbondale this fall with some significant help from the university.
Adalyn Jannusch of St. Joseph-Ogden High School and Mahomet's Coehn Steenbergen are among the students recognized for their academic achievements and involvement in their communities.
Jannusch, who plans to study exercise science at SIU Carbondale, was awarded the Chancellor's Scholarship. The university's largest first-year scholarship covers tuition, mandatory fees, on-campus housing and meals for four years.
Steenbergen, who currently attends Parkland College, earned the Provost's Scholarship. Steenbergen plans to transfer to SIU Carbondale to continue studying mechanical engineering. The Provost's Scholarship covers tuition and mandatory fees for two years and is SIU's largest award for transfer students.
The two students were among a select group of scholarship recipients recognized Sept. 15 at a luncheon at Apple Creek Golf Club in Makanda. SIU Carbondale Chancellor Austin Lane and other university officials attended the event.
Jannusch was one of 41 students selected for this year's Chancellor's Scholarship from 565 applicants. Steenbergen was among 23 transfer students chosen for the Provost's Scholarship from 113 applicants.
SIU said the scholarship recipients stood out not only for their academic records but also for leadership in their communities and participation in extracurricular activities. All of the recipients are invited to join the University Honors Program, which brings together high-achieving students for academic exploration, campus leadership and service to SIU and the Carbondale community.
For students looking ahead to college, the awards also illustrate the range of scholarship opportunities available at SIU Carbondale for high school seniors and transfer students.
