Ackerman, Ploense and Wells advance out Catlin sectional to state


Three local athletes earned trips to the IHSA Girls Track and Field State Finals during sectional competition Wednesday night in Catlin. Oakwood’s Taylor Wells qualified in two events, while Armstrong’s Ashlyn Ackerman and Heritage’s Bre Ploense also advanced.


CATLIN - Three area athletes extended their seasons Wednesday night at the IHSA Class 1A Catlin Sectional, earning trips to the IHSA Girls Track & Field State Finals scheduled for Thursday in Charleston.

Armstrong senior Ashlyn Ackerman advanced in the high jump, while Heritage junior Bre Ploense and Oakwood sophomore Taylor Wells each qualified in running events during competition hosted by Salt Fork.

Oakwood finished tied for 10th place in the team standings with Armstrong and Georgetown-Ridge Farm-Chrisman at 24 points. Heritage placed 13th with 18 points.

Bismarck-Henning captured the sectional championship with 118 points. Paxton-Buckley-Loda finished second at 72 points, while Clifton Central took third with 71.

Ackerman secured her return to state competition in the high jump, continuing her senior campaign for Armstrong.

Ploense punched her ticket to Charleston after placing third in the 200-meter dash with a qualifying time of 26.83 seconds. The Heritage sprinter will look to advance into next Saturday’s championship finals.

Wells qualified for state in two events for Oakwood. She earned an automatic berth in the 800-meter run after finishing second in 2 minutes, 24.38 seconds. Wells later added another state qualification by taking third in the 1,600-meter run to secure a second appearance in Thursday’s preliminary races.

The IHSA Girls Track & Field State Finals begin Thursday at Eastern Illinois University.

Matching her best outing this season against Olympia, Saints' Allison delivered a 25 point performance, shooting 67% from the field to tap the win at home on Friday against the Hawks. Teammate Emme Hurie added another 18 points and hauled in 10 rebounds in the 19-point win over Prairie Central. Kate Stolfa matched Hurie in the paint, snagging 10 rebounds for herself in the 65-46 conference win.

Rylan White drops 25 for the Hawks

Down 40-18 at the half, Heritage senior Rylan White led an epic rally, pouring in 25 points to help lead Heritage past Argenta-Oreana, 65-64 on Friday. The senior was a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds in the 65-64 conference win. Junior Brayden Jones tallied 13 points and Clark Roland, who led the team with five assists, chipped in 10 more. Coming off a 71-58 road loss to Tri-County, the Hawks improve to 8-12 on the season.

Scoring struggle sinks Tigers

Lai'yonna Harper led the Tigers with nine points and seven rebounds in the team's conference game at home against Bloomington. Kaya Hill finished with five points and eight boards in the 54-25 loss.

The Raiders had four players finish with double figures. Maddie Embry led all scorers with 17 points and 16 rebounds. Senior Bianca Ellis added 13 points, Tina Lenard chipped in 11, and junior Josie Skeate finished with 10 after her 22 minutes.

Urbana (1-11) travels to Decatur to take on the Panthers on Tuesday while Bloomington (6-13) hosts East Peoria at 9 a.m. for an early MLK day contest.


Spartans prevails in low scoring affair

St. Joseph-Ogden held Paxton-Buckley-Loda to an average of just five points a quarter in their conference win on Thursday. Timera Blackburn-Kelley finished the road game with a game-high ten points. Fellow seniors Katie Ericksen added eight and Kayla Osterbur chipped in six more. The Spartans (11-6) travel to Williamsville on Monday for a non-conference matchup against the Bullets.

On the other side of the court, Emmy Bagwell scored a quarter of the Panthers (4-13) scoring effort with a field goal and three free throws for five points. PBL faces Bloomington Central Catholic at home on Tuesday.


Strong rebounding effort helps Heritage roll Blue Ridge

Hawks' Addison Harper made 50% of her shot from beyond the arc to finish with 16 points in Heritage's 55-8 home win. Freshman Ryann McComas was fierce in the paint, grabbing 13 rebounds while adding four points in her 27 minute varsity appearance. Sophomore's Kalyn Miller and Violet Chesnut got in on the rebounding fun with seven and five, respectively against the Knights (2-3).

Nursing a three-point advantage at the half, the Tigers (6-8) engineered an explosive 30-point third quarter outburst to an eight-point win over the visiting Purple Raiders (8-8). The Urbana seniors stood tall, leading the way to extend the team's win streak to two games. Jessie MfWamba posted a double-double with 26 points and 12 rebounds. Landyn Hannah delivered 18 points and Kyree Hillsman contributed 13.

Spartans and Hawks strong at Acklin Meet as Charleston defends title. Paris’ Harrison Hays repeats as top finisher.


PARIS - East-central Illinois cross country teams converged on Paris High School Saturday for the 9th annual Acklin Cross Country Meet, with 19 schools and 146 runners competing in the varsity boys’ race. St. Joseph-Ogden placed fourth overall, while Heritage finished fifth in a field loaded with competitive talent.

SJO SPORTS

Charleston repeated as team champion, winning its second consecutive Acklin title with 72 points. The Trojans, who also claimed the 2024 crown with 67 points, were followed by Cumberland (84) and host Paris (94). The Spartans tallied 114 points, and the Hawks rounded out the top five with 165. Last year, SJO was runner-up with 87 points, and Cumberland finished third at 123.

Leading the way for Heritage was junior Clark Roland, who finished sixth overall in 16 minutes, 57.7 seconds. Freshman Christian Paul was next for the Hawks at 29th in 18:04.6, followed by sophomore Colby Schrock (37th, 18:20.8), freshman Greyson Guevara (42nd, 18:37.9) and senior Joshua Stierwalt (54th, 18:57.0). That top-five effort was enough to edge several larger schools and secure a top-five team finish.

The Spartans put five runners inside the top 30, separated by just 17 seconds. Junior Colin Burnett led SJO with a 20th-place finish in 17:44.5, with freshman Adam Bello (21st, 17:44.7), senior Lance Retz (22nd, 17:44.8), sophomore Eli Franklin (23rd, 17:46.6) and junior Nate Farney (28th, 18:01.0) close behind. Junior Aiden Hundley also contributed with a 30th-place finish at 18:11.1.

Paris junior Harrison Hays successfully defended his Acklin title, taking first in 15:53.57 after winning last year’s race in 16:49.48. He was followed by Dieterich senior Trevor Crutcher (16:04.79), Effingham senior Alex Gordon (16:22.41), Robinson junior Wyatt Herrington (16:40.25) and Cumberland freshman Colby Roedl(16:46.67). Hays, Crutcher, Gordon, Herrington and Roedl all finished among the top 10 a year ago, underscoring their consistency at the Acklin course. Roland was the highest Heritage finisher in the top 10 this year.

St. Joseph-Ogden girls capture Acklin Cross Country Meet title



Big finish in Paris: SJO girls XC secures team crown at Acklin Meet with two top-10 runners.


PARIS - The St. Joseph-Ogden girls cross country team continued its strong fall campaign on Saturday, claiming the team title at the Acklin Cross Country Meet hosted by Paris High School. The Spartans outpaced a 19-school field with a team score of 38 points, placing two runners in the top 10 overall.

SJO SPORTS Sophomore Grace Bressner led the way for SJO with a third-place finish, clocking 19 minutes, 49.4 seconds. Freshman Charlene Barbee joined her in the top tier, crossing the line in seventh at 20:28.6.

Freshman Allie Bott added a 14th-place finish in 21:12.1, followed closely by junior Kyla Franckey in 15th at 21:24.7. Rounding out the Spartans’ scoring lineup were freshman Taylor Vaughn (25th, 23:03.4) and senior Sydney Steinbach (28th, 23:22.1).

Heritage sophomore Reaghan Stierwalt was the Hawks’ top finisher, placing 21st in 22:25.4.

Marshall senior Molly Farrell won the individual title in 18:54.07, edging teammate Madeleine Fox, who placed second in 19:33.40.

SJO’s balance carried the Spartans to the team crown, holding off Newton (62 points) and Effingham (78) to secure the top spot on the podium.

She will be back on the big blue oval at O'Brien Field, having qualified for this year's state meet yesterday by taking third in the race at the Rushville Sectional.

Bowman along with teammates Kaelyn Swift, Emma Crawford, Addison Earley turned in a time of 1:45.71. After qualifying for the finals, the squad ran again on Saturday to win the bronze medal with an even better time of 1:42.91.

Teutopolis' Halle Bushue reaches back for the baton from teammate Adi Davidson while running in the 4x100 relay. The squad failed to make the finals with their 53.34 last year. Davidson will be heading back for another shot at a spot on the podium with three new squad members Adrienne Koester, Ella Neihls, and Emma Isley, who advanced with new 52.16 PR on Wednesday at the Newton Sectional.

Heritage state-qualifier Loren Tate competes in state triple jump
Heritage junior Loran Tate finished last year's state meet in 25th place with her best leap in the Triple Jump at 10.00m or 32' 9.75".

St. Anthony distance runner Isabella Keller made a splash her freshman year, placing second in the Class 1A state cross country meet in Peoria. Keller won her prelim heat in the 1600m run and went on to finish second in the championship event on Saturday.
