Tyler Henry erupts after the Rockets secure their Class 2A berth for the 2026 IHSA Boys Basketball State Finals at the Pontiac Supersectional on Monday. The Unity basketball program is just two wins away from a state title.

PONTIAC- If you haven't heard the news, Unity is heading back to the state tournament for the first time in more than two decades after surviving a high-scoring supersectional battle Monday night.

The Rockets defeated Bishop McNamara 77-70 to win the Pontiac Supersectional and secure a berth in the IHSA Class 2A boys basketball semifinals at State Farm Center. Unity, now 33-2 on the season, will face Peoria Manual at 2:30 p.m. Thursday.

Unity trailed early in the contest and worked its way back into the game after falling behind 16-10 at the end of the first quarter. The Rockets trimmed the deficit and went into halftime down just one point at 31-30.

The momentum shifted after the break. Unity surged ahead in the third quarter, building a 55-47 lead with a balanced scoring effort from several seniors who were also part of the program’s Class 3A football state title appearance in November. Dane Eisenmenger and Colton Langendorf combined for 12 points during the stretch, while Mason O’Neill added five and Tre Hoggard chipped in four as the Rockets gained control.

Bishop McNamara tried to close the gap in the fourth quarter, outscoring Unity 23-22, but the Rockets’ nine-point advantage created in the third period proved enough to hold off the late push.

Unity's Dane Eisenmenger and teammates celebrate near center court after knocking Bishop McNamara out of the postseason, extending the team's 24-game win streak.

Hoggard led all scorers with 22 points in one of his strongest performances of the season. The senior converted 6 of 8 free throws and went 5-for-6 at the line in the fourth quarter alone while scoring nine points in the final period. Hoggard entered the postseason averaging eight points per game but has elevated his production during the playoff run.

Tyler Henry added 16 points for the Rockets, including seven in the fourth quarter, while Eisenmenger finished with 14 to give Unity three players in double figures.

Bishop McNamara also placed three players in double-digit scoring. Coen Demark led the Fightin’ Irish with 20 points, while Karter Krutsinger added 18 and Richie Darr contributed 14.

The victory sends Unity to the state finals for the first time since 2002, when the Rockets finished fourth after losses to Herrin and Bureau Valley.

Standing in Unity’s way Thursday is Peoria Manual, a program with a deep history in Illinois high school basketball. The Rams, who enter the semifinal at 23-9, finished fourth in last year’s state tournament after falling to Dyett 54-50 in the semifinal and losing to Christ of the King 55-44 in the third-place game.

Manual owns five state championships and has collected 12 additional state trophies since its first appearance at the state tournament in 1913. Competing against larger enrollment schools during the regular season, the Rams are members of the Big Twelve Conference and with student enrollment of just over 650 students.

Manual enters Thursday’s semifinal on a nine-game winning streak. The Rams’ closest postseason game came in a 46-43 regional semifinal win over Tri-Valley. Each of their other eight victories during the streak has come by at least 16 points.

Unity will have a short trip to the state stage, traveling roughly eight miles from campus to State Farm Center in Champaign.

In the other Class 2A semifinal, Quincy Notre Dame will face Farragut. The losers of the two semifinal games will meet Friday at 8:45 p.m. for the third-place trophy, while the winners will advance to Saturday’s state championship game scheduled for noon.

Spartans' season ends in sectional semifinal loss to Manteno

St. Joseph-Ogden Basketball
Manteno's defensive pressure proved too much for St. Joseph-Ogden on Tuesday as the Spartans managed just 10 first-half points in a sectional semifinal defeat. The loss closes out a 20-11 campaign.

PONTIAC - St. Joseph-Ogden's girls basketball season came to an end Tuesday night with a 44-23 loss to Manteno in the sectional semifinal at Pontiac High School.

St. Joseph-Ogden Basketball
The Panthers' stifling defense held the Spartans to just five points in each of the first two quarters, building a commanding halftime lead. SJO struggled to find offensive rhythm in the second half, managing only 13 additional points despite adjustments.

Addi Brooks paced the Spartans with nine points, while Hayden Dahl added seven. Ashlyn Miller connected on a three-pointer in the third quarter, and Timeara Blackburn-Kelley and Ava Alexander each contributed two points in the loss.

Manteno's Emily Horath led all scorers with 19 points, and Maddie Gesky added 18 points in the paint for the Panthers (27-6), who advance to face Pontiac in Thursday's sectional championship game.

The defeat closes the season for SJO (20-11), which featured signature victories over Rochester, Williamsville and Unity. Interim coach Brian Brooks will lose nine seniors from this year's roster, including Kayla Osterbur, Addi Brooks, Ashlyn Miller, Kaitlyn Beyers, Timeara Blackburn-Kelley, Katie Ericksen, Mackenzie Loschen, Lexi Lackey and Kenzie Atwood.

The Spartans return just two juniors—Mia Jones and Hayden Dahl—along with sophomores Bella Frerichs, Megan Kearney, Ava Alexander, Atleigh Miller and Ainsley Dirksmeyer for next season. Interim head coach Brian Brooks was assisted by Bria Cessna and Taylor Howard.

Spartans' free throw shooting seals 53-40 regional championship win

St. Joseph-Ogden Basketball
Balanced scoring and ice-cold free throw shooting carried St. Joseph-Ogden past Bismarck-Henning 53-40 in Thursday's regional final.

BISMARCK - St. Joseph-Ogden turned a dominant first half and clutch free throw shooting into a 53-40 regional championship victory over Bismarck-Henning on Thursday night, despite a 26-point effort from the Blue Devils' Gentry Elson.

Nine Spartans contributed to the scoring as SJO built an 11-point halftime lead and never looked back. Kayla Osterbur paced the balanced attack with 13 points and nine rebounds, while Atleigh Miller added 12 points. Kaitlyn Beyers sparked the offense off the bench with nine points, including three first-half three-pointers that helped limit Bismarck-Henning to just 15 points before the break.

St. Joseph-Ogden Basketball
The Spartans sealed the victory at the free throw line, converting 18 of 25 attempts. Osterbur went 7-for-9 from the stripe in the second half, while Ashlyn Miller was a perfect 4-for-4 down the stretch. Their efficiency at the line offset Elson's 19-point second-half surge as the Blue Devils increased their aggression in the paint.

Addison Brooks and Ashlyn Miller each contributed six points in the winning effort for SJO (20-10), which captured its first consecutive regional title after defeating Prairie Central 43-29 two years ago.

The Spartans advance to the Pontiac sectional on Tuesday, where they will face Manteno (26-6) in a first-ever meeting between the programs.

Rockets' basketball season abruptly ended after sectional semifinal

SHELBYVILLE - Seven members of the Unity basketball roster delivered some sort of scoring in their semifinal game against Teutopolis in the Shelbyville sectional semifinal game. While beating the Wooden Shoes by 12 in early December last year, the Rockets were unable to repeat the feat, losing 48-39 on Wednesday.

Unity Rockets basketball
Henry Thomas led Unity's scoring effort with eight points. Sophomore Coleton Langendorf came off the bench to match senior Dalton O'Neill's output of seven points. Another sophomore, Dane Eisenmenger and Andrew Thomas' matched at five points apiece in the season finale.

Unity fell behind early and tied the score four times, the last at 17-all in the second quarter. The Rockets trailed within striking distance to overtake Teutopolis until the last two minutes of play. It was T-town's free-throw shooting down the stretch that propelled the program into the title game.

The Wooden Shoes made fourteen trips to the line in the final quarter and only missed converting on three attempts, despite the Rockets limiting them to only two field goals in the fourth quarter.

Austin Bloemer and Joey Niebrugge paced the Shoes with ten points each. Tyler Pruemer had eight points, while Garrett Gaddis and Alex Kremer finished with eight points apiece.

Teutopolis advanced to Friday's sectional title game in a rematch against St. Joseph-Ogden (27-6), who is enjoying a nine-game win streak. The Wooden Shoes prevailed in the January 9 game, 53-40.

The Rockets finished an impressive 2023-24 campaign with 26 wins against five losses.
