Rockets win softball season opener in Tennesse, and then some

JACKSON, TN - Lindy Bates went 3-for-3 in the Rockets' season opener earlier this month against Millington Central at the Sarah Beth Whitehead Tournament. Unity plated three runs in the third inning to beat the Trojans after five innings 4-2 on March 16.

Starting the bottom of the third down 2-1 on the scoreboard, Unity's Jenna Adkins went down swinging to give Millington the first out. Next, Ruby Tarr stepped up to the plate to face Trojan starter Breanna Hulsey. Tarr took her third pitch smacking leather out to center field, only to be caught by MC's Rilee Ervin.

With two outs on the board, Bates wasted no time and pounded the ball to right field, rounding first and on to second for a double. She later moved to third courtesy of a line drive from senior Reese Sarver.

With Unity bats now ignited, senior Ashlyn Miller, who scored on an error in the previous inning, knocked in the tying run on a fly ball out to left field while Sarver made her way to scoring position on third.

Then, tied at two-all, the Unity line-up kept their hands on the throttle scoring two more runs on a line drive double to right from Maegan Rothe to lock in the first win of the season.

Two days later, the Unity bats were still glowing. The Rockets amassed 27 runs across four games to finish the out-of-state tournament 3-1.

Unity bombs Peabody

The Rockets scored ten runs in the first inning of their second tournament game to stun the Golden Tide of Peabody High School, 12-0.

Ashlyn Miller and Reece Sarver booked two RBIs apiece, while Jenna Adkins, Lindy Bates, and Lauren Haas delivered one each in a contest that lasted just two and a half innings.

Jenna Adkins, Chloey Duitsman, Reagan Little, and McKayla Schendel padded their baserunning stats with one stolen bag each.

Striking out a trio of Peabody batters, Bates picked up the win, throwing just 28 pitches in the first two innings.

Adamsville falls victim to Rockets' firepower

Three hours after the start of the first game on Saturday, March 18, Jenna Adkins crushed the ball over the right field fence for a solo home run to knot the score at one-all in the first inning of the Rockets' Round of 16 game against the Cardinals.

UHS retired the next three Adamsville batters in the top of 2 before piling nine runs on the scoreboard to go up 10-1.

The Rockets enjoyed a bunted single by Maegan Rothe; doubles from Chloey Duitsman, Lindy Bates, and Ashlyn Miller; and a two-out two-RBI triple from Rothe on her second appearance in batter's box in the frame.

In the bottom of the third inning, Abbie Pieczynski, batting for Bates, tapped a ground ball to the pitcher. Tossed out at first, the senior's play allowed McKayla Schendel to score from third.

Up 11-1, Unity stretched their early season win streak to three games, outscoring opponents 27-3 after Sarver flew out to center field.

Unity suffers first loss

Camden scattered five unanswered runs across four innings against the Rockets in their tournament quarterfinal game. In a hole too deep to climb, UHS was eliminated from medal contention after a 6-4 finish.

Lindy Bates, who absorbed the pitching loss, had one hit and tallied two stolen bases. Sophia Beckett, Lauren Haas, and Ruby Tarr logged one stolen base a piece.

Unity 2022-23 First Semester Honor Roll Announced

Unity suffers loss at home in defensive battle to Cissna Park

TOLONO - The Unity Rockets girls basketball team fell short in a 36-25 loss to the visiting Cissna Park Timberwolves on Tuesday night, as offensive struggles and strong defensive pressure from the Timberwolves denied the team a home win in the non-conference contest at the Rocket Center.

Unity started strong, leading 9-8 after the first quarter, thanks to early contributions from Lauren Haas and Claire Meharry. Haas tallied four points in the opening period, while Meharry added five. However, Cissna Park adjusted in the second quarter, taking a 17-12 halftime lead behind the steady play of Lauryn Hamrick and Addison Lucht.

The Timberwolves maintained control in the second half, outscoring Unity 19-13 over the final two quarters. Hamrick led all scorers with 11 points, going 5-for-8 from the free-throw line. Lucht chipped in nine points, including an efficient 5-for-6 performance at the stripe.

Meharry finished with a team-high nine points for Unity, while Haas added seven, converting 33% of her attempts. The Rockets struggled offensively, shooting just 25% (10-for-40) from the field and 50% from the free-throw line.

The loss drops Unity to 4-3 on the season, marking their second consecutive defeat. The Rockets will look to rebound Wednesday night when they host Arthur-Lovington-Atwood-Hammond (ALAH) at the Rocket Center. Cissna Park improves to 5-1 with the win, continuing their strong start.

Haas and Meharry lead Unity in tough loss at Clinton

CLINTON - In their first game following the Thanksgiving holiday, the Unity girls basketball team struggled to gel on offense, falling 54-30 on the road to Clinton on Monday night. The Rockets were unable to contain the balanced attack from Clinton's offense while facing difficulty generating scoring opportunities.

After trailing 19-7 after the first quarter, the Unity was unable to generate enough momentum to close the initial gap on the Maroons. The loss drops the Rockets to 4-2 on the season, ending a three-game win streak. Meanwhile, Clinton improved to an identical 4-2 record. The victory marks the second straight win for the Maroons after a pair of tough losses to Deer Creek-Mackinaw and Decatur MacArthur.

The deficit was engineered by Clinton's Clara Dempsey, who poured in a game-high 16 points. Teammates Regan Filkin and Avery Smith added nine points each, while Lilah Cluver contributed eight to round out the team's scoring effort. The victory marks Clinton’s second consecutive win after two earlier losses against Deer Creek-Mackinaw and Decatur MacArthur.

For Unity, seniors Lauren Haas and Clair Meharry each scored nine points, providing much of the Rockets' offensive output. However, the team couldn’t find consistent scoring support, with McKinley Weller and Mackenzie Pound adding three points each. Josie Cler, Grace Bickers, and Emily Decker scored two points apiece.

The loss marked a temporary setback for the Rockets, who now turn their focus to a four-game home stand starting tonight against Cissna Park. The Rockets look to rebound by capitalizing on their home-court advantage, facing Arthur-Lovington-Atwood-Hammond on Thursday before hosting Urbana next Monday and Watseka the following Saturday.

Unity says farewell to 2024 with a win a Christmas tournament

BISMARCK - Unity girls' basketball team ended 2024 with a win, defeating Bismarck-Henning-Rossville-Alvin (BHRA) 33-26 at the 2024 Blue Devil Classic on Saturday. The victory broke a three-game losing streak after the Rockets' last successful outing in a 36-27 win over Armstrong.

Claire Meharry led all scorers with 16 points and went 2-for-2 from the free throw line to secure Unity's eighth win. Teammate Lauren Haas finished the game strong with eight fourth-quarter points on her way to ten points. Selected to the All-Tournament team, like Meharry, Haas shot 100% from the charity stripe.

Unity also received contributions from Grace Bickers and McKinley Weller, who had four and three points, respectively.

Alivia Reifsteck was responsible for nearly half of BHRA's scoring effort with 12 points. Draycee Nelson added another nine for the Blue Devils. Sophomore Gentry Elson supplied three points, and Sophia Stines rounded out their point production with two.

After taking a much needed rest and get in the gym for quality practice sessions, Unity returns to action on Monday, January 6, with a road game at Arcola. Meharry and the team will play two more contests on the road before taking their home court against St. Thomas More on January 13 for an Illini Prairie Conference matchup.

Prep Sport Notebook | Hall big on the boards for Urbana, Unity loses first game

URBANA - Janae Hall hauled in nine of her team's 28 rebounds in Urbana's 51-10 loss to visiting MacArthur on Thursday.

"Urbana was shorthanded tonight but worked hard," said head coach Bobby Boykin.

Hall and newcomer Zion Reid finished with just four points apiece on offense. Freshman Lai'yonna Harper rounded out the Tigers' scoring effort with a field goal.

Urbana hosts Mahomet-Seymour in a non-conference contest on Monday.

Rockets suffer first loss

GIBSON CITY - Raegen Stringer exploded in the second half of Unity's Lady Falcon/Bunnie Tip Off game against Tri-Valley scoring 12 of her 18 points. Her effort was not enough to overcome the 13-point halftime deficit against the Vikings on Thursday night, which resulted in the Rockets' first loss of the season, 42-28.

Addison Ray finished with six points and six rebounds, while Reagan Little, credited with six boards and four steals, was held to a third quarter field goal for two points. Stringer added four rebounds, three steal, and two assists to her season stats.

Claire Meharry and Lauren Haas each sank a free throw to detail UHS' scoring effort. Haas' defensive effort produced five rebounds and two steals. She also dished out five assists.

Tri-Valley (3-0) had three players in double figures. Sophomore Addy Friehaut led her team's effort with 13 points, Kelsey Bartels added 11 points, and Cadence Geiser scored eight fourth quarter points to finish with ten total.

Unity girls advance to regional title game after win on Monday

MONTICELLO - Their second game of the season against Warrensburg-Latham was over by halftime. The Unity girls' basketball team enjoyed a 23-9 lead thanks to Addison Ray's three treys in the first two periods en route to a 49-34 regional semifinal win over the Cardinals on Monday.

Illinois College recruit Raegen Stringer (six rebounds, four assists) led all scorers with 17 points for the Rockets. Ray tacked on five points to her first-half total, finishing with 14 points and five rebounds. Clare Meharry came off the bench and contributed double digits, contributing 10 points to the cause.

Unity's Lauren Haas and Meredith Reed finished the game with four points each. Haas, who dished out three assists, led the team on the boards with eight rebounds.

Two weeks ago, the Rockets beat the Cardinals at home in their non-conference game, 54-46.

Sophomore Delaney Garner paced the Warrensburg-Latham scoring effort with 12 points. Meanwhile, Breanna Dutcher went four-for-four from the free-throw line to finish with seven points.

Advancing to the Monticello regional title game, Unity will face Paris, who are also 19-11. The Tigers advanced after knocking off the host Sages, 42-37.

Meharry leads Rockets at shootout, hard-fought effort falls short

Unity's Claire Meharry drives to the paint in Unity's Country Financial Shootout game against Watseka. Meharry finished the game with 12 points. Combined with Lauren Haas' 12-point output, it was enough to stave off a late fourth-quarter surge of five unanswered scores by the Warriors, who went on to win the non-conference game 52-46 on Saturday. Spartans rally to Senior Night win over Rockets

ST. JOSEPH - It was anybody's ball game at the start of the fourth quarter in the Main Gym at St. Joseph-Ogden. Tied at 33-all and second-place conference standing on the line, visiting Unity came up four points short, falling 48-44 to SJO.

'You live or die by the three,' some coaches say. Last night, the Spartans thrived, finishing ten treys on their side of the scorebook. Senior Addisyn Martinie, who led St. Joseph-Ogden with a team-high 20 points, delivered five three-pointers.

The Spartans improved to 7-1 in the Illini Prairie, and 14-10 overall for the season.

Raegen Stringer led Unity's scoring effort, finishing the contest with a game-high 23 points. The senior collected four steals and hauled in four rebounds. Addison Ray contributed eight points with two three-pointers and a field goal. Lauren Haas rounded out the top three scorers for the Rockets with five points, all collected in the second half, and with six rebounds, and two assists.

Unity dipped to third in the conference standings with a 6-2 record and will put their 17-11 record on the line next week against Monticello (10-16) in their Senior Night game.

Sophomore Timera Blackburn-Kelley had her best night of the season, finishing as the second-leading scorer for the St. Joseph-Ogden with seven points. Addison Frick and Katie Ericksen chipped in six points each, along with Addison Brooks' five first-half total.

The Spartans host Paxton-Buckley-Loda (3-12) on Monday and finish regular season play with a road trip to Peotone on Wednesday.

Hoopeston Area falls to St. Anne

HOOPESTON - Kendrick Sigerill scored 22 points against St. Anne, but it wasn't enough for the Cornjerkers to slip past visiting St. Anne on Saturday. The Cardinals used a third quarter 17-10 burst to surge ahead of Hoopeston in a 68-60 finish.

Three other Conjerkers finished with double figures in the stat book. Owen Root tallied 14 points, Wyatt Eisenman had 11 points, and Mason Rush chipped in 10 more in the non-conference match-up.

Hoopeston Area (10-4) looks to rebound from the loss on the road in their final game of the year tonight at Iroquois West.

SJO girls win shootout game

ST. JOSEPH - Addisyn Martinie buried five three-pointers to finish with a team-high 21 points in St. Joseph-Ogden's 49-39 win over Arthur-Lovington-Atwood Hammond at the Country Financial Shootout on Saturday.

Martinie sunk the first bucket from behind the arc, and SJO never relinquished the lead, at one point by as may as 15 points, the entire game.

The Spartans utilized three other scorers besides Martinie in the victory. Senior Addison Seggebruch finished with 13 points, Addison Frick contributed 11 points, and Katie Ericksen rounded out the squad's scoring effort with four points.

URBANA - Coming off a huge 83-71 win over Sacred Heart Griffin last Tuesday, the Urbana boys' basketball team dropped a conference barnburner on the road to Normal West 53-49 in overtime.

Seniors Isaiah Robinson and Nate Moore led the Wildcats (3-6) with 15 and 16 points, respectively.

The Tigers dropped to 1-6 after the loss.

7-0 Rockets are all-systems-go

Pleasant Plains - The Unity basketball team continues to fly high above the competition this season, picking up their seventh win cruising past Pleasant Plains 56-33.

Unity out-rebounded the Cardinals 27-24 and logged 12 steals, remaining undefeated. The Rockets are on the road with six more games to play before the new year.

Rockets misfire at Mt. Zion

MT. ZION - Raegen Stringer scored Unity's only field goal in the second quarter during their road game with the Lady Braves on Saturday. The hiccup allowed Mt. Zion to prevail, 41-28.

Stringer then went on to score 11 points in the second half, finishing with 15 points. Addison Ray chipped in six points, Reagan Little hit two buckets in the first quarter for four points, and Lauren Haas coverted three free throws to round out the Rockets' scoring effort.

Little led the team's rebounding effort with seven boards.

Tigers win two on Saturday

Carbondale - The Urbana basketball team started a two-game win streak on Saturday at the Carbondale Showcase. Despite a 29-point spree by Commanche freshman Donald Collier, the Tigers won their opener over Cahokia, 78-68.

Later, Urbana knocked off Carbondale, 68-66. Terriers' Decarl Payne led his team's scoring effort with 31 points against the Tigers (3-5).

The Urbana boys basketball team plays their next game on January 5 when they host Bloomington High School in a Big 12 match-up.

Thomas piles on points at Williamsville Holiday tournament

Williamsville - Henry Thomas led Unity in their 62-57 win over Peoria Christian on Thursday with 21 points. Dalton O'Neill and Dane Eisenmenger added 10 points each to propel the Rockets into the semifinals against Illini Prairie Conference foe Prairie Central.

Another team win, Unity enjoyed scoring from seven other players, including Tre Haggard with two points, Colton Langendorf 5, Brayden Henry 5, Aiden Porter 2, Jay Saunders 3, Eric Miebech 1, and Andrew Thomas rounding out the scoring effort with five points.

St. Joseph-Ogden boys advance to semis at State Farm tourney

Bloomington - Tanner Jacob scored 16 points, and Coy Taylor piled on another 14 in the Spartans' quarterfinal game against Rock Falls. In complete control from start to finish, St. Joseph-Ogden kept the game out of reach, defeating the Rockets, 66-40.

Unlike their opener against East Dubuque, SJO took an early lead and didn't look back with seniors Luke Landrus, who snagged nine rebounds, and Logan Smith with seven assists, contributing nine points each.

St. Joseph-Ogden looks to lock up one of the title game spots tomorrow after tonight's 8:30 pm game against Pecatonica. The Indians, in their first State Farm Holiday Classic appearance, shocked Normal U-High yesterday, 62-55.

Unity girls roll past Armstrong-Potomac

Bismarck - Addison Ray scored a game-high 19 points for the Rockets in the team's 61-41 win over Armstrong-Potomac. Ray amassed her total take in three quarters and was 3-for-8 from three-point range.

Raegen Stringer finished with 12 points, and Reagen Little had ten points. Unity's bench contributed 20 points in win number ten. Emily Decker scored six points, Claire Meharry delivered for points in the second half, Jocelyn LeFaivre four points, Elle Cheely 2 points, and Lauren Haas added four more to the cause.

Unity will face Benton Central (14-2) in the Heritage/Bismarck Holiday Tournament championship game.

Rockets blast Comets in tournament quarterfinal

Bismarck - Unity's Addison Ray started her day at the Heritage/Bismarck Holiday Tournament with 16 points to lead Unity to a 51-25 win over Oakwood yesterday. Raegen Stringer, who was 2-for-2 from the free-throw line, scored 11 points, and Reagan Little book ten points to advance in the Rockets in the championship bracket.

Jaydah Arrowsmith and Nikita Taylor paced the Comets with six points each.

Spartan girls rebound

Bloomington - Katie Ericksen drained a season-best 20 points in SJO's 45-42 win over Rockford Lutheran in the State Farm Holiday Classic Small School consolation bracket quarterfinal. Addisyn Martinie chipped in 11 points, and Addison Frick, a perfect 2-for-2 from the charity stripe, finished with seven points.

The Lady Spartans advanced to a semifinal game against Port Byron Riverdale.
