ST. JOSEPH - Unity left little doubt about its place atop the Illini Prairie Conference this weekend. For Unity, it was a statement performance, blending individual dominance with team-wide consistency. With another conference championship secured, the Rockets will carry both momentum and confidence forged over two decisive days on the mat in the upcoming postseason.

Unity captured their seventh conference championship with a dominant two-day performance, running the table against all seven league opponents to claim the title and improve to 19-10 on the season. Entering the tournament as the No. 1 seed, the Rockets delivered on that billing from start to finish, combining depth, bonus points and timely pins to separate itself from the field.

The championship was effectively decided in Unity’s final dual, a 44-36 win over host St. Joseph-Ogden in what proved to be the Rockets’ stiffest test of the tournament. Despite losses at 106, 113, 120 and 126 pounds, Unity swung the dual with four pivotal pins. Hayden Smith sparked the run with a fall at 144, followed by Hunter Shike at 150 and Josh Heath at 175. Chason Daley sealed the win at 215 with a second-period pin of Liam Carter, providing the eight-point margin that held up at the final whistle.

Unity’s path to the title began Friday with a commanding sweep through the round-robin bracket. The Rockets opened with a 72-10 rout of St. Thomas More, then followed with a 65-9 victory over Prairie Central. They closed the first day by pulling away from Illinois Valley Central, 60-21, positioning themselves for a championship push on Saturday.

Momentum only grew on day two. Unity overwhelmed Rantoul 77-6 and Pontiac 55-20 in its morning duals before dispatching Monticello 54-24. That set the stage for the showdown with St. Joseph-Ogden, where Unity’s ability to generate falls in the middle and upper weights ultimately proved decisive.

Several Rockets delivered standout performances across the two days. Shike was flawless, finishing undefeated while making quick work of most of his opponents. He recorded pins in under a minute in four of his matches and capped his weekend with a first-period fall at 1:55 over St. Joseph-Ogden’s Nathan Daley in his toughest bout of the tournament. With one forfeit mixed in, Shike closed the event at 6-0.

Daley was equally dominant at 215 pounds, posting five victories, all by fall. His most competitive match came against Carter in the finale, ending at 3:49, while his other wins never extended beyond the first period. Like Shike, Daley also benefited from one forfeit to finish 6-0.

Freshman Hayden Smith added to Unity’s depth with seven total wins, three by forfeit. Wrestling at 144, Smith recorded victories over Nicholas Dunner of Rantoul, Braden Oppermen of Pontiac, Drake Weeks of Monticello and Alec Bowlin of St. Joseph-Ogden, contributing critical points throughout the weekend.

St. Joseph-Ogden finished second in the standings at 7-1, sweeping its other six duals with its lone loss coming against Unity. Monticello placed third, followed by Pontiac in fourth, Illinois Valley Central in fifth, Prairie Central in sixth, Rantoul in seventh and St. Thomas More in eighth.

Unity boy's basketball team rolls over Central A&M at holiday tournament.

EFFINGHAM - Dane Eisenmenger led the way offensively as Unity pulled away early and never looked back Monday at the Effingham Christmas Classic.

Eisenmenger scored 15 points to pace four Unity players in double figures in an 80-49 win over Central A&M. The victory marked the Rockets’ fifth straight and improved Unity’s record to 7-1 on the season.

Unity Athletics
Unity seized control from the opening tip, limiting Central A&M to just three field goals in the first quarter while building a 17-point lead. The defensive effort allowed the Rockets to dictate tempo and keep the Raiders out of rhythm for much of the night.

The margin widened in the second quarter as Unity showcased its depth. Eight different Rockets combined to score 28 points in the period, turning an early advantage into a commanding halftime lead and putting the game firmly in Unity’s control.

Carter Schmid and Taylor Henry each finished with 12 points for the Rockets, providing consistent support throughout the lineup. Mason O’Neill added 11 points, and Colton Langendorf chipped in 10 as Unity spread scoring responsibilities and kept fresh bodies on the floor.

Central A&M fell to 5-5 despite a team-high 19 points from Ace Spinner. Kadyn Higgins added 12 points for the Raiders, who were unable to close the gap after the opening quarter.

With the outcome largely decided by halftime, Unity remained steady in the second half, continuing to rotate players and manage the game on both ends of the floor. The Rockets cruised through the final two quarters, closing out another convincing win and carrying momentum forward in holiday tournament play.

Members of the Unity football team celebrate their win over St. Joseph-Ogden. Winning the semifinal game, the Rockets earned the right to face Byron next Friday for the Class 3A title.

ST. JOSEPH - Unity earned its ticket to the IHSA Class 3A championship game with a 51-44 win over St. Joseph-Ogden on a bright mid-November afternoon at Dick Duval Field. The matchup between two of central Illinois’ most consistent football powers delivered everything expected from a playoff showdown, with both teams trading big plays and momentum swings before the Rockets closed the epic battle out.

St. Joseph-Ogden struck early behind senior standout Wyatt Wertz, who found the end zone twice in the first quarter. Wertz continued to power the Spartans’ offense throughout the game, finishing with 94 rushing yards on 16 carries and adding a game-changing 99-yard kick return for another score in the third quarter. His 210 all-purpose yards fueled SJO’s effort to keep pace in a contest that rarely slowed.

Quarterback Kodey McKinney added two rushing touchdowns on runs of 16 and 18 yards while also throwing for 210 yards. The senior led the Spartans on the ground as well with 119 rushing yards, helping SJO briefly capture momentum as the teams traded long drives and explosive plays.

Unity’s offense matched the challenge with a productive day from Crewe Eckstein, who was a force between the tackles. Eckstein piled up 161 yards and scored twice on short runs of 2 and 5 yards, helping the Rockets keep the chains moving and maintain balance as the game tightened.

But the true difference came from the Unity defense, which delivered back-to-back lightning strikes midway through the second quarter. With St. Joseph-Ogden driving, Brayden Henry jumped a pass and returned it 40 yards for a touchdown. Just 78 seconds later, Caden Hensch intercepted another ball and sprinted 28 yards to the end zone, pushing Unity to a 25-17 lead that swung the game’s momentum for good.

St. Joseph-Ogden, the No. 14 seed entering the postseason, wrapped up a strong run with an 8-5 finish.

Unity (12-1), which has reached the playoffs 33 times and owns six runner-up trophies, now moves on to next Friday’s championship game at Illinois State University’s Hancock Stadium. First-year head coach Tony Reetz has his program one win away from its first state title.

Standing in the Rockets’ path is undefeated Byron (13-0), which advanced with a 44-10 win over Richmond-Burton. The Tigers have reached the postseason 31 times and carry three state championships and two runner-up finishes into the matchup. The teams last met in the 2021 title game, when Byron won 35-7, two years after falling 24-20 to Monticello in the 2018 final.

Rockets' soccer team posts first win with 4-1 victory over Hoopeston Area

McCaskill’s hat trick and strong defense fuel Unity soccer’s first victory, setting up conference play next week.

Unity Athletics

TOLONO - After six heart-breaking attempts, the Unity High School soccer team finally broke through Monday night, securing their first win of the season with a 4-1 home victory over Hoopeston.

The Rockets, who had struggled to find the back of the net all season, relied on a blend of veteran poise and youthful energy to finally get over the hump, improving to 1-4-2.

Unity struck first at the end of the opening half, with seasoned forward Caden McCaskill converting a precise pass into the goal. Hoopeston answered in the second half when Beckett Moran found the net, briefly tying the match at 1-1. But the Rockets refused to let momentum slip away. McCaskill, feeding off another well-placed setup from teammates, scored again to put Unity ahead 2-1, then completed his first hat trick of the season for a 3-1 lead. Logan Wells added the finishing touch late in the game, pushing the final tally to 4-1.

Goalkeeper Carter Cromwell was a key factor in the win, turning away 14 Hoopeston shots and keeping the Rockets in control throughout.

Next up, Unity heads into conference play, beginning with a Thursday matchup against undefeated St. Joseph-Ogden (16-0) at Dick Duval Field. Following that, the Rockets travel to Rantoul (4-7, IPC 0-1) and conclude the week at home against Illinois Valley Central (7-6-2, IPC 0-2).

Unity shocks St. Joseph-Ogden with dominant defense, advances to quarterfinal round

Photo: Sentinel/Clark Brooks

Quarterback Dane Eisenmenger rolls out behind a solid wall of Unity blockers during their second-round playoff game against St. Joseph-Ogden. Eisenmenger, who was 9-for-14 passing, threw four TD passes to advance the Rockets past the Spartans.

TOLONO - In a second-round playoff matchup Saturday that saw both defensive grit and offensive fireworks, the Unity Rockets (8-3) defeated the previously unbeaten St. Joseph-Ogden Spartans (10-1) with a commanding 35-7 score. Unity’s defense held the Spartans, who averaged five touchdowns per game during their undefeated regular season, to their lowest scoring output since 2022, shutting down a high-powered, dominant offense that many thought would be difficult to contain.

Unity’s ground attack was fueled by Garrett Richardson, who powered through the Spartans’ defensive line for 215 yards on 42 carries. Richardson's relentless rushes brought his season total to 1,635 yards. He found the end zone once in the first half, adding to his total of 103 yards at the break. Matching his impressive ground performance was Tre Hoggard, who provided a receiving spectacle with three first-half touchdown catches. He finished the game with 124 yards and a fourth touchdown that brought Unity’s lead to a decisive 35-7 with just over eight minutes left in the game.

Quarterback Dane Eisenmenger also turned in a strong showing, completing 9 of 14 passes for 152 yards and connecting repeatedly with Hoggard to keep Unity’s offense pushing forward. Eisenmenger’s accuracy and strategic playmaking helped Unity establish a 28-7 lead by halftime putting SJO's back on the ropes.

Rockets' Garrett Richardson looks for running room around St. Joseph-Ogden's Tanner Siems. Despite not finding his way into the end zone, the senior running back ate up 215 yards of turf on SJO.

The true spotlight, however, belonged to the Rockets' defense. With 61 tackles, 36 of which were solo efforts, Unity suffocated the Spartans’ potent offense, led by the prolific SJO quarterback Kodey McKinney. St. Joseph-Ogden, a team known for its effective running game, was limited to just 59 rushing yards, rendering their offense one-dimensional and struggling to keep pace.

Unity’s defensive unit, anchored by disciplined tackling and an aggressive pass rush, applied constant pressure, forcing quick decisions from McKinney and keeping SJO’s star receivers, Tanner Siems and Coy Taylor, in check.

The Spartans' only score of the game came in the first quarter when McKinney powered through for a 7-yard rushing touchdown with 3:45 left. Siems, SJO's version of San Francisco 49ers great Jerry Rice, finished with four catches for 77 yards. Meanwhile, Taylor, who now holds Illinois’ all-time career receptions record with 259, managed seven catches but was limited to 34 yards in Unity’s tightly controlled defensive scheme.

Unity head coach Scott Hamilton credited his team’s win to their experience and resilience, honed through a demanding schedule.

Photo: Sentinel/Clark Brooks

Big pushes by the Unity front line enabled ball carriers to pick up first downs almost at will against St. Joseph-Ogden. Rockets' Jaden Dene and Spartans' Carson Sarnecki mix it up nose-to-nose in the trench.

"You play guys like Belleville Althoff, you learn to get better and stick to the process," he said while players and fans celebrated near the east end zone. "We talked about running the ball, being physical and that's what it takes this time of the year."

After a narrow 24-21 regular-season loss to St. Joseph-Ogden, Unity made noticeable improvements, especially in tackling and defensive discipline, which Hamilton attributed to focused preparation.

"I think defensive we are tackling a lot better. Offensively, I think our edge, parameter stuff, and blocking has got a lot better."

Hamilton also credited the big plays by special teams. The Rockets recorded three sacks and consistently enjoyed solid field position that kept the game’s momentum in their favor.

"It was all three phases. It was a huge special teams win."

The win not only solidifies Unity’s postseason run but also continues an impressive record against St. Joseph-Ogden in playoff meetings. In eight postseason encounters, Unity has emerged victorious seven times, with the Spartans’ lone win occurring in the 2006-07 season. Hamilton, who has led Unity’s program for 31 seasons and holds a remarkable 290-73 record, may have another opportunity to chase the state championship title that has eluded him thus far, with six runner-up finishes across his storied career.

St. Joseph-Ogden head coach Shawn Skinner acknowledged that his team’s execution faltered in the face of Unity’s balanced attack.

"There were so many things that didn't happen in this game that we've done all year," Skinner said after giving his team their last postgame talk on the gridiron. "We didn't convert in the red zone. We dropped interceptions that hit us on the hands. The field position game was in their favor for most of the first half. We haven't done that all year. We controlled the field position game."

While the loss marks the end of SJO’s season at 10-1, the Rockets will face the Nashville Hornets (10-1) in the quarterfinals at Hicks Field on Saturday. Nashville advanced after a decisive 41-21 win over Greenville and brings its explosive offense to Tolono looking to step over Unity for a spot in the Class 3A semifinals.

As the Rockets gear up for another round, Hamilton remains focused on Unity’s disciplined approach and urging his team to deliver the same intensity and physicality demonstrated against the Spartans.

"Playmakers have got to make plays and we had some guys do it today," said Hamilton, who will be looking for more of the same this Saturday.

Brayden Henry holds up the net while celebrating with teamates and fans after the Rockets' epic victory over Teutopolis on Friday.

MONTICELLO - Unity had already seen Teutopolis twice this season, and both times the Wooden Shoes walked away with the win. Friday night in the Monticello Class 2A sectional championship, the Rockets finally got their revenge and it couldn't have come at a better time.

Brayden Henry drove to the basket and delivered a layup at the buzzer, lifting Unity to a dramatic 59-58 victory and sending the Rockets to the Pontiac Supersectional.

The win sends Unity (32-2) one step from the state tournament, marking the program’s deepest postseason run since 2002. The Rockets will face Kankakee McNamara on Monday in Pontiac with a trip to the IHSA state finals on the line.

Friday’s matchup carried the intensity of a rivalry built over the course of the season. Teutopolis had claimed the first two meetings, defeating Unity 56-50 in the season opener and edging the Rockets again 37-36 on Dec. 31. With a sectional title at stake in the third meeting, the Rockets delivered when it mattered most.

Unity started quickly, building a 16-11 lead in the opening quarter behind seven combined points from the Henry twins and four points from senior Tre Hoggard. Teutopolis rallied in the second quarter and carried a 25-23 lead into halftime.

The Rockets reclaimed the momentum in the third quarter and opened the fourth with a 41-36 advantage, setting the stage for a tense finish.

Teutopolis mounted a late charge behind Isaac McWhorter, who finished with a game-high 23 points. McWhorter sparked the Wooden Shoes in the fourth quarter with three 3-pointers and two field goals, while also converting both of his free-throw attempts. Gavin Addis added 13 points, including two field goals and a perfect 3-for-3 performance from the free-throw line in the final quarter. Layndyn Thoele contributed nine points, all in the first half.

Unity answered with balanced scoring. Henry led the Rockets with 20 points, scoring in every quarter before delivering the game-winning basket. Dane Eisenmenger and Tyler Henry each finished with 10 points, while Mason O’Neill added two free throws. Eisenmenger was perfect from the line at 3-for-3, and O’Neill went 2-for-2.

The victory extends Unity’s winning streak to 23 games and moves the Rockets within one win of the state tournament.

Kankakee McNamara (25-5) awaits Monday in the Pontiac Supersectional after defeating Yorkville Christian 69-56 in overtime at the Seneca Sectional. The Fightin’ Irish enter the matchup averaging 61 points per game while allowing opponents about 45 points per contest.
