St. Joseph-Ogden's Ben Wells defends himself against a shot from Prairie Central's Andrew Patino during their bout at the Illini Prairie Conference duals last month. Wells won the regional title for his weight class, advancing to sectionals this weekend.

COLFAX - The mat narrowed and the margins tightened Saturday at Ridgeview High School, where every takedown carried postseason weight and every whistle pushed area wrestlers closer to Olympia. By the end of the Class 1A regional, 11 wrestlers from Unity and St. Joseph-Ogden had done enough to keep their seasons alive, earning advancement to next Friday’s IHSA Individual Sectional at Olympia High School.

St. Joseph-Ogden sent five wrestlers through, highlighted by two regional champions who controlled their brackets. Sophomore Ben Wells (40-6) delivered a composed performance at 113 pounds, defeating Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley’s Ian Rotramel (30-13) by a 10-4 decision to claim the title. At 285, junior Cam Wagner (28-6) imposed his pace early and often, earning a major decision over GCMS’ Carson Sexton (32-12) to secure another championship for the Spartans.

Unity matched that top-end success with a dominant run from Abram Davidson. The senior capped his day as the Rockets’ lone regional titlist, scoring a technical fall at 3:58 against GCMS junior Cooper Miller (37-10) at 165 pounds, finishing with a 22-7 advantage that underscored his control from start to finish.

Depth carried Unity through the rest of the bracket, with five Rockets finishing as regional runners-up. AJ Daly (35-12) placed second at 138, Hayden Smith (36-12) followed at 144, Devin Glik (24-17) earned a runner-up finish at 150, Ben Mullins (33-14) placed second at 157, and senior Josh Heath (36-11) closed the group with a second-place showing at 175.

St. Joseph-Ogden added critical points and sectional qualifiers through grit in the placement rounds. Senior Vance McComas was the Spartans’ lone runner-up finisher, while Nathan Daly at 150 pounds and Coy Hayes at 165 battled back to secure third-place finishes, each doing enough to extend their postseason run.

Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley captured the team championship with 309.5 points. Unity finished second with 158 points, and St. Joseph-Ogden placed third with 142.5, placing both area programs firmly in the sectional conversation heading into Friday.

St. Joseph-Ogden competitors at the regional were: (106) Weston Hubbard, freshman (12-6); (113) Ben Wells, sophomore (37-6); (120) George Hale, sophomore (26-17); (126) Camden Getty, senior (35-9); (144) Alec Bowlin, junior (5-18); (150) Nathan Daly, senior (28-11); (157) Alex Vaughn, junior (25-10); (165) Coy Hayes, senior (35-7); (175) Devan Swisher, senior (18-13); (190) Vance McComas, senior (26-16); (215) Liam Carter, sophomore (29-15); (285) Cam Wagner, junior (25-6).

Unity’s regional lineup included: (106) Vincent Abon, sophomore (23-20); (120) Deklyn Thomas, freshman (5-25); (126) Bryson Williams, freshman (7-28); (132) Sam Hollett, freshman (7-21); (138) AJ Daly, freshman (33-11); (144) Hayden Smith, freshman (34-11); (150) Devin Glik, senior (21-16); (157) Ben Mullins, junior (31-13); (165) Abram Davidson, senior (38-6); (175) Josh Heath, senior (34-10); (190) Bradley Smith, sophomore (24-16); (215) Chason Daly, senior (27-17); (285) Cristian Sellers, senior (10-25).

The sectional round at Olympia High School awaits Friday, February 13, where only the top finishers will punch their tickets to state, and the stakes will rise with every bout.

Spartan wrestlers advance to IHSA sectionals after big day at Monticello regional

St. Joseph-Ogden senior Jackson Walsh wrestles MacArthur's Tristan Green during their 120 pound match last month. Walsh was one of four Spartan wrestlers who advanced out of the Monticello regional meet on Saturday to sectionals.

MONTICELLO - Four St. Joseph-Ogden wrestlers advanced to this year's IHSA sectional meet at Clinton this Friday and Saturday. Ben Wells, Jackson Walsh, Landen Butts, and Cam Wagner, each with over 34 wins this season, wrestled their way out of the regional meet at Monticello High School last Saturday.

Wells, who is 35-11 for the season, finished second at 106 pounds for SJO, losing the title bout to Hoopeston Area's Charlie Flores (44-3) a minute and two seconds into their match. Finishing 2-1 for the day, the SJO freshman standout pinned St. Thomas More's RJ Cinnamon (19-15) in their quarterfinal match and notched an 18-3 technical fall against LeRoy's Austin Pacha.

At 113 pounds, Jackson Walsh went 3-0 to win a regional title for the Spartans. After a bye in the quarterfinals, Walsh faced Prairie Central's Julius Smith, whom he pinned a minute and 11 seconds into their match. His title match pitted him against LeRoy's Jake Baughman (23-21). With his best technical performance of the season, Walsh built a 15-point advantage for a tech fall, improving his season record to 39-8.

Senior Landen Butts was on the mat four times on his way to third place and qualifying for the sectional championships. After a first-round bye and cruising past Pontiac's Cale Christenson, Butts went toe-to-toe with Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley's Ethan Lowe in the 144-pound semifinal.

Lowe led on the scoreboard, going up 3-0 with a late first-period takedown. Neither wrestler could score in the second period. Lowe scored an escape and another takedown in the final period before getting the pin at 3:29. In the consolation bracket, Butts won his last two matches to finish the day 3-1 and in third place.

Cam Wagner also punched his ticket for a sectional appearance wearing the Spartans' maroon and Columbia blue. The coveted nationally recruited D1 lineman finished the day 2-1 and second in the 285-pound division. After the sophomore won his first two matches by pin, he was pinned himself in the division's title bout against LeRoy's Tate Sigler (41-5).

Also scoring major team points for the Spartans were Nathan Phillips (23-17) and Aiden Hundley (26-25), both finishing fourth in the 215- and 138-pound divisions, respectively.

Phillips went 2-2 with both losses to Unity's Chason Daly (21-21), concluding his final season with the SJO wrestling program with 23 wins and 17 losses.

If there were an award for the most matches wrestled, Hundley easily would have won it, having wrestled six matches. The sophomore won four matches via pins, totaling four minutes and 46 seconds, with three lasting an average of 45 seconds.

Unity crushes Golden Aces, playoff rematch set for Saturday against the Monticello Sages

The Rockets rolled over Mt. Carmel in the first round and now prepare for a revenge-fueled playoff rematch with the Monticello Sages at Hicks Field.

TOLONO - The echoes of last November still linger in Tolono. A bitter 23-20 semifinal loss to Monticello ended Unity’s state title dreams and sent the Sages to the Class 3A championship game. Now, nearly a year later, the Rockets are rocketing toward redemption - and the rematch is set.

Unity made that clear Saturday afternoon at Hicks Field, where the fourth-seeded Rockets (9-1) dismantled Mt. Carmel 42-14 in a first-round playoff rout that felt over before it began.

Unity's Tyler Henry celebrates his 46-yard TD catch in the east end zone at Hicks Field. The score came after his 35-yard pick-six less than two minutes earlier in the second quarter.

On a sun-splashed Saturday at Hicks Field, the Unity Rockets didn’t just win a playoff game - they made a statement. From the opening kickoff, it was clear that this wasn’t going to be one of those nail-biters fans talk about years later. It was domination, pure and simple, wrapped in maroon and white. The Rockets scored on their second play from scrimmage - just 28 seconds into the game - and never looked back, building a 42-0 halftime lead before turning the second half into a showcase for their freshman squad.

The win marked Unity’s seventh straight and punched their ticket to a second-round showdown with fifth-seeded Monticello, a rivalry game steeped in history, heartbreak, and high stakes.

But before we get there, though, the Rockets had business to take care of first. Let’s rewind to Saturday’s statement win.

Fast Start, Furious Finish

Crewe Eckstein wasted no time setting the tone. The junior running back sliced through the Golden Aces defense for a 21-yard touchdown run on Unity’s opening possession, then added a second score minutes later on a 10-yard burst. By the end of the first quarter, Unity led 21-0.

Tre Hoggard added to the fireworks with an 18-yard touchdown run in the first frame, then hauled in a 47-yard over-the-shoulder strike from quarterback Dane Eisenmenger in the second quarter. Eisenmenger was nearly perfect, completing 6 of 7 passes, while Hoggard finished with three catches for 70 yards.

Tyler Henry delivered the exclamation point before halftime. With 2:17 left in the second quarter, the senior intercepted a Mt. Carmel pass and sprinted 35 yards to the end zone, igniting the Unity bench and student section. Henry had already scored earlier on a 46-yard reception and finished with 55 yards on two catches.

Golden Aces' Jack Webb makes a leaping catch despite tight coverage by Rockets' Brayden Henry. Webb, a senior, finished the last game of his prep career with just three yards rushing on two touches and six yards on this catch.

Defense Dominates

Unity’s defense was relentless. The Rockets held Mt. Carmel to just 208 total yards on 48 plays - a stark contrast to Unity’s 306 yards on 34 plays. Chason Daly recorded two sacks, Desmond Winfrey added a tackle for loss, and Graydin Cler snagged an interception to cap a suffocating defensive effort.

Mt. Carmel’s lone bright spot came in the second half against Unity’s JV unit. Senior Elliott Acree led the Golden Aces (5-5) with 83 all-purpose yards, including a 22-yard reception and 61 rushing yards on 13 carries. Jack Webb and Owen Blake each scored late touchdowns, but the damage had long been done.

Looking Ahead: Monticello Awaits

Photo: Sentinel/Clark Brooks

Tre Hoggard runs the ball for a Unity touchdown in the first half. The senior rolled up 24 yards rushing and 70 receiving yards. Hoggard and the Rockets turn to defeating Illini Prairie foe Monticello for a second time this season.

The last time the two teams met, Unity rolled to a 34-7 win on the road in their regular season contest back in September. But the memory of last year’s semifinal heartbreak, when Monticello edged Unity 23-20 to reach the state title game, still lingers and there is redemption that needs to be settled.

Last November, nearly 50 weeks ago, Monticello stunned Unity on the last play of the game on their home field, sending the Sages to the state final. Saturday, with revenge and redemption on the line, the Rockets are will put the 2024 game behind them once and for all.

Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. Saturday at Hicks Field, where the fence line is expected to be packed three deep with fans, for an Illini Prairie team advance to a quarterfinal game.

Depth and pins propel St. Joseph-Ogden to second at IPC wrestling tournament

St. Joseph-Ogden placed second at the Illini Prairie Conference Wrestling Tournament with a 6-1 record. The Spartans swept six duals and fell only to Unity in the championship matchup. SJO opened the tournament with three lopsided wins on Friday.

ST. JOSEPH - St. Joseph-Ogden put together a dominant two-day showing at the Illini Prairie Conference Wrestling Tournament, finishing second overall with a 6-1 record and sweeping its six non-Unity duals in convincing fashion. The weekend was yet another sign that Spartan wrestling program is making positive strides back to its position of one of the area's top Class 1A wrestling programs with the return of the Gallo family leading the program after a 16-year hiatus.

The Spartans’ only conference tournament loss came against eventual champion Unity, which secured its seventh league title. SJO controlled the rest of the field, placing ahead of Monticello, Pontiac, Illinois Valley Central, Prairie Central, Rantoul and St. Thomas More.

St. Joseph-Ogden opened the round-robin tournament Friday with a 71-6 rout of Prairie Central, followed by a 72-9 win over Illinois Valley Central. The Spartans closed the first day by overpowering Rantoul 59-9, establishing early momentum behind depth throughout the lineup.

Saturday began with a 48-33 victory over Pontiac, then a 57-24 win over Monticello. SJO capped its non-championship duals by cruising past St. Thomas More 72-12 before setting up a title-deciding matchup with Unity.

Spartans' Cam Getty settles in for a pin during his 126 pound match against Illinois Valley Central's Bradley Allen.

The championship dual began at 144 pounds, where Unity quickly seized momentum. The Rockets opened the match with a fall by Hayden Smith over Alec Bowlin at 144. The team from Tolono strung together victories at 150, 157, 165 and 175 to build an early 27-0 advantage by controlling the middle of the lineup.

St. Joseph-Ogden stopped the run at 190 pounds, where senior Vance McComas pinned Bradley Smith for six points. Unity responded at 215, as Chason Daley delivered a pivotal second-period fall over Liam Carter to extend the lead to 33-6.

At heavyweight, Cam Wagner won his seventh match in two days with a 40-second pin of Christian Sellers. Wagner added valuable team points despite limited competition, recording a pin against Pontiac and collecting multiple forfeits.

As the dual wrapped back through the lighter weights, St. Joseph-Ogden mounted a late surge. Levi Lee earned a first-period pin over Vincent Abon at 106 pounds. Sophomore Ben Wells followed at 113 with two takedowns before pinning Ian Skibbe 38 seconds into the bout. George Hale added another fall at 120 by pinning Deklyn Thomas, and Cam Getty capped the lightweight run with a first-period pin of Bryson Williams at 126.

The four consecutive wins gave SJO a 36-33 advantage heading into the 132-pound match, which the Spartans had to forfeit. In the final contested bout of the meet, Unity clinched the match and conference title with a technical fall by AJ Daly over Aiden Hundley.

Individually for the Spartans, Getty finished the tournament with five wins, all by pin, with his only loss coming in sudden victory against Pontiac freshman Jack Voigts.

Coy Hayes also posted six wins, including five pins and one forfeit, with his lone setback coming by major decision to Unity’s Abram Davidson.

Carter finished with five victories and one loss at 215 pounds. Four of his wins came by pin over opponents from Monticello, Pontiac, Illinois Valley Central and Prairie Central.

Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly reported the starting weight class of the dual meet between Unity and St. Joseph-Ogden. The match began at 144 pounds, not 106. The story has been updated to reflect the correct order of competition. We regret the error.
