Tanner Siems logs another double-double, SJO wins IPC game at IVC

CHILLICOTHE - In another thrilling display on the hardwood, St. Joseph-Ogden showcased their prowess, securing a hard-earned victory over Illinois Valley Central with a final score of 58-53. Tanner Siems proved to be a standout for the Spartans, delivering his second double-double of the week. The senior dominated beneath the basket, racking up 22 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. His defensive tenacity was on full display with three steals, contributing crucially to his team's defensive effort.

Leading the charge in scoring was Coy Taylor, who notched an impressive 23 points, including a stellar 12-for-16 performance from the free-throw line. Taylor, a senior leader for St. Joseph-Ogden, also tallied nine rebounds and led the team in assists, further solidifying his impact on the game.

Despite a lean bench rotation that saw action from only eight players, the Spartans managed to convert 19 of their 52 field goal attempts, showing efficiency particularly from the charity stripe where they sank 18 of 28 attempts. Parker Fitch and Collin Thomey were perfect from the line, each contributing crucial points in the victory.

Looking ahead, the 13-5 Spartans remain focused as they prepare to host the Prairie Central Hawks (6-13) later today at 5:30 PM. Seeking their third conference win, St. Joseph-Ogden aims to maintain their momentum in the competitive Illini Prairie Conference.

SJO continues to dominate IPC foes at conference meet, defeats Rantoul 58-16

CHILLICOTHE - In a commanding display of prowess, the St. Joseph-Ogden wrestling program continued their winning streak at the Illini Prairie Conference wrestling meet, triumphing over the Rantoul Eagles with a resounding 58-16 victory on day 2 of competition.

Almost every contested match ended in a pin, serving notice of SJO's rise back to its former reputation as a formidable small school wrestling program with the return of the Gallo family as coaches.

Aiden Hundley added to SJO's tally with a commanding fall over Kooper Wiles from Pontiac, while Jackson Walsh displayed his dominance with a pin over Sophia Mussari from Pontiac, solidifying his 2-0 record for the weekend.

TOLONO - Grace Bickers' total point production in Unity's home conference game against Prairie Central was greater than the combined effort of any three players from the Hawks' girls' basketball team. The sophomore shooting forward led all scorers with 15 points and capped the game with six rebounds for the Rockets.

Unity, behind a solid second half of play, outscored their opponents 29-13 and defeated Prairie Central, 50-26. The win moved the Rockets over the .500 mark with a 12-11 overall record and 4-1 in the Illini Prairie Conference.

"It was a great team defensive effort, and we were able to convert that defense into points on the other end," said first-year head coach Michael Donovan on the win. "Offensively, we were patient against the zone and moved the ball well to create good shots for teammates."

It was nearly a total team effort for the Rockets on Thursday, with 10 of the 11 players on the roster contributing to the final score. In supporting roles, Kendal Zerrusen and Emily Decker finished with five points each.

Decker, who recently signed her National Letter of Intent to continue her cross-country running career at Ball State University in Indiana, also snagged six rebounds for the Rockets.

It was outside shooting that gave Unity the advantage they needed, making five of 19 attempts from behind the arc. Prairie Central made just one of 11 long-range shots. The Rockets also dominated the points-after-turnover stat, with nearly half their total points (26) coming after Prairie Central turnovers.

Prairie Central was paced by Jayla Hammond's five points.

Unity has three games lined up next week, with two opportunities to move up in the conference standings. The Rockets travel to Pontiac (11-12, 3-2) on Monday to face the Indians in a regular-season conference game. On Thursday, they will host Illinois Valley Central (15-6, 5-1) at the Rocket Center and finish the week on Saturday with a home game against PORTA (18-5).

The Spartans held a one-point lead after the first quarter, but the Sages found their stride in the second quarter, outscoring their visitors 21-13 over the next two frames. Each team made just one field goal in the fourth quarter, with the remainder of the scoring coming from free-throw conversions.

America for sale; corporations and billionaires flooded Trump’s inauguration with cash

by Craig Holman
      OtherWords

The nation has never seen influence peddling like we just witnessed at Trump’s second, billionaire-stuffed inauguration.

President Trump sounded a lot of populist notes on the campaign trail. But as he took the oath of office for the second time, he was joined onstage by billionaires and CEOs who’d spent millions to be there — leaving supporters who’d traveled across the country to attend literally out in the cold.

Presidential inaugurations have always been an opportunity for wealthy special interests to curry favor with the incoming administration with generous inaugural donations. But the nation has never seen influence peddling like we just witnessed at Trump’s second inauguration.

Shattering all records, the Trump Vance Inaugural Committee, Inc. raised and spent over $200 million in special interest money celebrating the 2024 election victory. (The all-time previous record was $107 million for Trump’s first inauguration in 2017. By contrast, Biden’s 2021 inauguration raised and spent nearly $62 million.)

Nearly all this financing comes from companies and wealthy business leaders who have business pending before the incoming administration. Rarely are small donations received from citizens simply excited about a new president.

The public won’t get a full picture of Trump’s inaugural donors until the spring, when the one-and-only disclosure report is filed 90 days after the inauguration. But the ones we know about so far are painting an ugly picture of corporations, government contractors, billionaires, and millionaires seeking to endear themselves to Trump and his administration.

Access itself does not necessarily mean success at buying official favors. But the sheer volume of today’s inaugural donations suggests that wealthy special interests believe it is worth the investment.

All the self-reporting donors — including Big Tech firms like Google, Microsoft, Meta, Amazon, and OpenAI — pledged $1 million or more. The cryptocurrency firm Ripple pledged $5 million. In fact, the cryptocurrency industry even hosted its own inaugural ball.

And of course, Wall Street is cozying up with major donations from Goldman Sachs, Bank of America, and billionaire hedge fund manager Ken Griffin.

“EVERYBODY WANTS TO BE MY FRIEND!!!” Trump marvels on his Truth Social account.

Some of these new friends previously expressed opposition toward Trump, who has a history of seeking revenge against his adversaries and even said he might seek retribution in his second administration. “When this election is over … I would have every right to go after them,” Trump said of his political opponents over the summer.

In addition to being former Trump critics, Mark Zuckerberg of Meta, Jeff Bezos of Amazon, and Sam Altman of OpenAI have their sights on major government contracts from the new administration. Each has now donated $1 million to Trump’s Inauguration. Zuckerberg and Bezos even partied with Trump at Mar-a-Lago and at the inauguration in DC.

What else does all this money buy? Access. Access itself does not necessarily mean success at buying official favors. But the sheer volume of today’s inaugural donations suggests that wealthy special interests believe it is worth the investment.

Presidential inaugurations have not always been such a soiree for the wealthy. Nixon in 1973 spent less than $4 million on his inauguration. Carter in 1977 spent $3.5 million. Thomas Jefferson in 1801 simply walked to the Capitol to be sworn in and then walked home.

The very ripeness for scandal this time around calls for reasonable restrictions on the sources and amounts of inaugural donations. Corporations, and certainly government contractors, should be banned from donating.

Contributions should be limited to avoid even the appearance of buying favors. The disclosure requirement should be vastly expanded to include disclosing expenditures as well as donations. And rules should be established on how surplus funds are dispensed.

Presidential inaugurations should be celebrations for the nation as a whole, not influence-peddling opportunities for the very wealthy.
