Zamora leads Hoopeston Area in 8-point win over Westville
HOOPESTON -- Anthony Zamora stepped up with a 15 point finish to lead Hoopeston Area to a 54-46 conference win over Westville on Tuesday.
Zamora, averaging 12.3 points per game, made six of his eight shots from the field and drained half of his attempts from the line. The senior collected a team-high five steals.
Junior Owen Root and sophomore Trenton Montez also finished with double-digit scores against the Tigers. Root logged two boards and two assist to give the Vermilion Valley team their first conference win of the season with his 13 points performance. Montez came off the bench to score 10 points, four from the charity stripe.
The Cornjerkers improve to 4-5 on the season. The team travels to Milford (5-2) on Thursday to face the Bearcats in another conference test and follows up with another game on Friday evening at St. Anne (2-9), who are 1-3 at home against opponents this season.

Ray rains treys in Rocket home win
TOLONO - Unity downed visiting Clinton 50-43 behind double-figure production from three seniors. Addison Ray led all scorers with 14 points. Ray drained three three-pointers to help the rally in the third quarter. Raegen Stringer finished with 13 points, and Reagan Little added another 12 points in the non-conference win. The Maroons were paced by starter Clara Dempsey, who scored 11 points in the first quarter, with 12 points.
SJO first half lead results in win over visiting Tuscola
ST. JOSEPH - Addison Seggebruch led St. Joseph-Ogden's scoring effort with a team-high 14 points in their 61-47 non-conference win over Tuscola. Addisyn Martinie added another 12 points, and Addison Frick finished with 10 points. Warriors' Sicily Moss led all scorers with a game-high 16 points.
Tigers improving
MONTICELLO - Aziyiaha Davis finished with a team-high eight points in Urbana's 42-22 road loss at Monticello. Zion Reid added another seven points to make up the bulk of their team's scoring effort in their best outing this season. The Tigers are at home on Thursday against Charleston.
Hoopeston's Root scores 31
HOOPESTON - Owen Root made 12 of his 20 shots to score 31 in Hoopeston Area's 68-40 win over Judah Christian on Monday. Kendrick Sigerill finished with 12 points. Junior Trenton Montez, who led the team with six assist, rounded the team's top three scorers with nine points. Root also had six rebounds and three steals for the Cornjerkers.

Romole scores twice in first half
Nolan Romle scored two of Unity's four goals in their home soccer match against Meridian on Thursday. The freshman's two scores, bookending a strike from Gabe Pound, gave the Rockets a 3-all tie leading heading into halftime.
Later, Meridian striker Spencer Uphoff broke the tie with an unassisted goal in the second half, but the Rockets refused to lie down thanks to junior Andrew Mowrer notching a penalty kick to retie the score, this time at four goals apiece.
With his first goal already under his belt in the first half, Hawks Micah McCoy scored the game-winning goal handing Unity a 5-4 loss.
Mason Davis made 13 saves on the day for the Rockets.
Still looking for their first win of the season, Unity (0-4) will play their next game, the team's first road match, on Monday, September 6 at Warrensburg-Latham. Romole and Rockets then travel to Champaign to face the Tribe of Judah Christian on Thursday.

Thomey buries two goals
When the bout was said and done, both the St. Joseph-Ogden soccer team and Hoopeston area would part ways with the identical season records of 4-1-1. Staring at recording their second loss of the season at the end of the first half, St. Joseph-Ogden bounced back to win their second road match of the season handing the Cornjerkers their first loss by way of a 3-1 advantage.
Hoopeston's Harrison Wood gave his team the early lead and their only goal of the contest despite 19 other attempts from his teammates. Teammate and goaltender Owen Root (6 saves) kept the ball out of his net during the first half play, but would later let three second-half Spartan shots slip by him in the final half.
SJO senior Jared Emmert earned his first of two assists feeding the ball to junior Aiden Cromwell to tie the game at one goal each. Emmert then set up the go-ahead score with a pass to Colin Thomey. Thomey, a freshman, sealed the victory with a follow-up goal with the help of Owen Baltzell.
Hunter Ketchum made 18 saves guarding the Spartan goal.
The St. Joseph-Ogden soccer team returns to the pitch on Monday, September 6 at Bismarck-Henning. Hoopeston Area visits St. Anne today and plays another road match, this one close to home, at Schlarman on Tuesday, September 7.

Tigers fall at home
After avenging an earlier loss to St. Joseph-Ogden on Tuesday, the Urbana girls tennis team dropped their next home match to Centennial on Thursday, 8-1.
The Tigers' solo win came at #4 singles from Alisa Tangmunarunkit, who defeated the Chargers' Nicole Vozovoy, 8-4.
Next up, Tangmunarunkit and her teammates will host the St. Thomas More tennis team on Tuesday at 4pm.

SJO golf finishes second at triangle
Jacob Kern, McGwire Atwood, Maddux Carter and Logan Smith combined for a four-man total of 181 strokes leading the St. Joseph-Ogden (7-1) golf team to a second-place finish in a three-school competition between Monticello and Rantoul-Paxton-Buckley-Loda varsity golf contingents.
Monticello finished first with 160 and Rantoul in third with 190 strokes.
Kern led the Spartans with 46 strokes on the Par 36 back nine at Willowbrook Golf Course. Atwood finished one stroke behind him with 47. Carter and Smith rounded out the top four scores with 43 and 45 respectively. Jack Robertson finished the course with 51 strokes and Talan Miller with 57.
SJO's Connor Hale shot a 59 and Tyler Buss 56 as varsity extras on Thursday.

Dow notches four straight wins
After a win-less first season in 2020, the St. Joseph-Ogden tennis program picked up its third team victory after rolling over Watseka on the road, 7-2.
SJO dusted up the doubles courts taking all three matches and picked up four wins in singles to improve their team record to 3-2 on the season.
Abbey Dow picked up another win at #1 singles besting the Warriors' Ashton Peters, 8-4. The Spartan now boasts four straight wins in singles competition.

Uni outlasts Monticello
Arjun Kala had six saves in Uni-High's 3-2 win over Monticello at home on Thursday.
Noah La Nave had a hand ... er, leg in all three Illinek scores with his first coming via a pass from junior Teo Chemla 13 minutes after Monticello scored their first goal of the game.
Early in the second half, La Nave delivered a righteous pass for Arya Thirodira to sink the go-ahead score. The lead was short-lived as Monticello scored on a penalty kick near the halfway mark in the final half to tie the affair at two-all.
La Nave and Chemla teamed up again for the game-winner 70 minutes into the match for the final goal of the non-conference dual.

SJO volleyball remains unbeaten
The SJO volleyball squad improved to 6-0 on the season after powering past visiting Teutopolis 25-20, 25-10 at home, originally scheduled to be played in T-town, on Thursday.
Becca Steinbach tallied 12 assists and senior Hannah Fox stood out defensively with seven digs on the Spartans home court.
Kennedi Burnett delivered five aces and pounded six kills in the rout. The veteran senior also had six digs.
Next week, the St. Joseph-Ogden volleyball team hosts Champaign Central on Tuesday, September 7, and Oakwood a day later on September 8.

Spartan wrestling team win nine bouts by pin
WARRENSBURG - Nine St. Joseph-Ogden wrestlers pinned their opponents in the squad's match against Warrensburg-Latham on Tuesday for 54-26 dual victory.
Quincy Jones (215 pounds), Khaden Hallowell (190), James Barron (175), Devan Swisher (165), Coy Hayes (157), Logan Xiao (150), Brandon Goodwin (144), Holden Brazelton (132), and Jackson Walsh (113) recorded wins for the Spartans.
With four matches left in 2023, SJO does not wrestle at home again until January 9 next year.
On fire, Montez drops 21 against Westville
WESTVILLE - Hoopeston Area junior Trenton Montez went 8-for-11 from the field on his way to an impressive 21-point game against Westville. Seniors Owen Root and Kendrick Sigerill finished with a double-double. Owen chipped in 11 points and collected ten rebounds. Sigerill, who also finished with 11 points, snagged 11 boards in the conference win.
SJO beats Riverton on the mat
WARRENSBURG - Riverton forfeited eight matches, allowing St. Joseph-Ogden to pick up another dual win this season.
Brodie Harms pinned Wyatt Abrums in the second period of their 285-pound match for the Spartans. At 144-ponds, Brandon Goodwin stuck Hawks' Brody Skiles in 47 seconds, and Landen Butts did the same in the second period of his 138-pound bout.
Maddie Wells picked up a varsity win after pinning Riverton's Donovan Bryant in the first period at 132-pounds.
Rockets stretch win streak to six
CHAMPAIGN - The Unity boys' basketball team seized the moment, picking up a road win over Champaign Central, 55-46. The Rockets remain undefeated after their first six games of the season.
On the road for the rest of the year, UHS play again on Saturday at Pleasant Plains, followed by stops in Paris (12/19) and Armstrong (12/21) before holiday tournament play.

Spartan girls draw tough first round seed
BLOOMINGTON - The St. Joseph-Ogden girls basketball team is back in the field of competition at the State Farm Holiday Classic. Senior Addison Frick and the Spartans (2-3) play their first game 20 days from today against #4 seed Bishop McNamara (7-1) at Normal Community.
This year's top small-school girls seeds are Camp Point Central/Augusta Southeastern in the #1 position and Paris at #2. The Panthers beat the Tigers in last year's championship game, 36-32. Galena earned the #3 spot, and Bishop McNamara was voted #4 in the poll given to coaches, media around the state, and committee members.
SJO is scheduled to play at 10:30 am on the Wednesday after Christmas.

GIBSON CITY - Owen Root scored 14 points in Bismarck-Henning's win over Armstrong-Potomac. Mason Rush and Kendrick Sigerill scored 11 points each. Root and Sigerill led the team on the boards with six rebounds apiece. Wyatt Eisenman chipped in eight points and tallied three of the team seven steals at the GCMS Thanksgiving Tournament.

ST. JOSEPH - Three SJO players tallied double figures in the scorebook, but it was enough to surpass their extended meeting with the visiting Tigers on November 11. Junior Katie Erickson led the Spartan effort with 12 points in the overtime effort. Addison Frick connected drained three treys and a jumper for ll points and Addisyn Martinie contributed ten points in the loss.

Seggebruch leads Spartans in first win of the season

ST. JOSEPH - SJO's A-Team came together rolling over the visiting Warriors for their first win of the season. Addison Seggebruch scored a team-high 14 points on her home court on November 11. Addisyn Martinie finished with 12 points, and Addison Frick rounded out the top three scorers with 10 points. The Spartans made nearly half their total points from outside the arc, hitting nine three-pointers in the non-conference game. Sicily Moss led Tuscola's effort with 16 points across all four frames. The loss broke a four-game win streak for the Warriors and remains their only loss as of today.

ST. JOSEPH -- The St. Joseph-Ogden volleyball team evened-out their season-record on Thursday after defeating the visiting Lady Shoes of Teutopolis, 2-0. The Spartans, now 3-3, got six kills each from senior Shayne Immke and junior Addie Roesch. After a few miscues at the start and Immke at the service line, SJO grinded out a five-point run to go up 7-3 in the first set. Their opponent later answered a five-point rally of their own to pull within a score 11-10 before the momentum shifted back to the Spartans's favor for the remainder of the game. Head coach Abby McDonald's team closed out the opening set with six consecutive points for a 25-16 win. The Spartans' won the second set by an even wider margin, 25-12. The Lady Shoes called a timeout while nursing a 5-point deficit on the score board, 11-6. When the two teams returned to the floor, SJO took total control of the contest giving up just six points out of the last 20 exchanges. Setter Taylor Hug tallied up 18 assists, and hammered an ace in the first set. Roesch led the team with five digs defensively. Meanwhile, Immke's four aces led the team's offensive effort.
Unity suffers soccer loss on the road
MACON -- Unity goal keeper Cole Saunders made four saves during his team's road match at Meridian High School. After an unassisted score from Hawks in the first half, the Rockets were unable to respond.Dow celebrates Senior Day with a win
URBANA -- St. Joseph-Ogden senior Abbey Dow picked up a win at #1 doubles with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Watseka's Emma Simmons. She and five other seniors were honored at the tennis team's final home match of the season.
In doubles action, two other SJO seniors pulled out wins. Duo Hallie Harms and Katie Earley defeated Warriors' Annika Greene and Marisa Clarke on the #3 court, 6-2, 7-6.
The team's six senior members include Dow, Earley, Harms, Jessica Gadbury, Isabel Sexton, and Katie McDermott.
Cafarelli shoots a 40
RANTOUL -- Spartans' Ashten Cafarelli carded 40 strokes on the back nine holes at Willow Pond golf course, but it wasn't enough as the St. Joseph-Ogden golf team finished in third place in a three-team meet in Rantoul. Monticello, with three players turning in scores lower than Cafarelli's, won the day with a 159. Rantoul slipped by SJO with a six-man score of 173. Maddux Carter (43), Jacob Kern (45), McGwire Atwood (49), Jack Robertson (51), and Tyler Buss (51) rounded out the Spartans' top six players on Thursday who counted 177 strokes.Lockhart scores game winner

Preston VanDeVeer and Anthony Zamora finished with nine points each in Hoopeston Area's loss at home to the Comets. Kenddrick Sigerill led the Cornjerkers (2-3) on the boards with a season-high 11 rebounds finished with eight points. Hoopeston Area's Owen Root went 3-for-6 from the field putting eight points in the book.
• St. Joseph-Ogden 66 - Oakwood 31 Ty Pence drained 33 points in SJO's title game against Oakwood at the Toyota of Danville Classic on December 3. The senior D1 recruit scored 15 points in the first quarter to put the host Spartans on cruise control to this year's tournament title. Junior Brody Taflinger led the Comets, who entered the fray with an impressive 8-0 record, with a 13-point effort in the team's first loss of the season.
• Teutopolis 56 - Unity 40 Before boasting a four-game win streak, the Rockets suffered their second consecutive loss at the hands of the Wooden Shoes on December 3. Despite nine players contributing with two or more points, Unity fell 56-40. The Rockets led at the halfway point by five and trailed by one, 38-37, at the end of the third quarter. Jay Saunders, who led the team in the loss with nine points, hit the team's only field goal during a fourth-quarter offensive collapse. Dalton O'Neill sank one of two free throw attempts to round out the scoring in the frame to just three points. O'Neill, Unity's second-leading scorer, finished with seven points. Henry Thomas tallied five points in the third quarter. Joey Niebrugge, a junior, led all scorers with in the contest with 18 points.
• St. Joseph-Ogden 68 - Watseka 28 Junior Logan Smith and senior Ty Pence combined effort produced 48 of SJO's 68 points in the team's romp over the Warriors at the Toyota of Danville Classic. Pence, an 2023 Illinois State basketball recruit, drained 28 points while Smith rained down 20 more. Six other Spartans including Maddux Carter and Brock Trimble contributed to the victory.
• Rochester 56 - Unity 46 Andrew and Henry Thomas sank 11 points apiece in the Rockets' second game of the season. Without home court advantage, Unity (1-1) came out of the locker room cold after the halftime break, scoring just six points to Rochester's 17.
• St. Joseph-Ogden 44 - Danville 14 Addisyn Martinie dropped a game-high 16 point in the Spartans' first game during the month of December that snapped a three-game early season slide. Addison Seggebruch supplied 13 points in the non-conference victory. SJO's improves to 2-4 heading into their next contest against Maroa-Forsyth at home.
• URBANA 39 - Charleston 34 Senior Gabrielle Mboyo-Meta led the Tigers girls' basketball effort with 16 points in the team's first win of the season. Junior Jasmine McCullough also delivered a double-digit finish with 13 points. Urbana (1-3) enjoyed a team effort with six points from McKenzie Sprague and two points apiece from Savannah Blanden and Elizabeth Lange. Trojans' Ally Logsdon all scorers with 19 points, 15 of those delivered in the fourth quarter of the non-conference game on December 1.

Junior Brody Taflinger led the Comets, who entered the fray with an impressive 8-0 record, with a 13-point effort in the team's first loss of the season.
• Teutopolis 56 - Unity 40 Before boasting a four-game win streak, the Rockets suffered their second consecutive loss at the hands of the Wooden Shoes on December 3. Despite nine players contributing with two or more points, Unity fell 56-40. The Rockets led at the halfway point by five and trailed by one, 38-37, at the end of the third quarter. Jay Saunders, who led the team in the loss with nine points, hit the team's only field goal during a fourth-quarter offensive collapse. Dalton O'Neill sank one of two free throw attempts to round out the scoring in the frame to just three points. O'Neill, Unity's second-leading scorer, finished with seven points. Henry Thomas tallied five points in the third quarter. Joey Niebrugge, a junior, led all scorers with in the contest with 18 points.
• St. Joseph-Ogden 68 - Watseka 28 Junior Logan Smith and senior Ty Pence combined effort produced 48 of SJO's 68 points in the team's romp over the Warriors at the Toyota of Danville Classic. Pence, an 2023 Illinois State basketball recruit, drained 28 points while Smith rained down 20 more. Six other Spartans including Maddux Carter and Brock Trimble contributed to the victory.
• Rochester 56 - Unity 46 Andrew and Henry Thomas sank 11 points apiece in the Rockets' second game of the season. Without home court advantage, Unity (1-1) came out of the locker room cold after the halftime break, scoring just six points to Rochester's 17.
• St. Joseph-Ogden 44 - Danville 14 Addisyn Martinie dropped a game-high 16 point in the Spartans' first game during the month of December that snapped a three-game early season slide. Addison Seggebruch supplied 13 points in the non-conference victory. SJO's improves to 2-4 heading into their next contest against Maroa-Forsyth at home.
• URBANA 39 - Charleston 34 Senior Gabrielle Mboyo-Meta led the Tigers girls' basketball effort with 16 points in the team's first win of the season. Junior Jasmine McCullough also delivered a double-digit finish with 13 points. Urbana (1-3) enjoyed a team effort with six points from McKenzie Sprague and two points apiece from Savannah Blanden and Elizabeth Lange. Trojans' Ally Logsdon all scorers with 19 points, 15 of those delivered in the fourth quarter of the non-conference game on December 1.
Prep Sports Notebook: SJO volleyball wins again, Rocket road trip unsuccesful
SJO outlasts visiting Marshall, 50-21
St. Joseph-Ogden's Emma Ward served 16 consecutive points in set 2 of the Spartans' home volleyball match against Marshall on Monday. Ward, who had two aces and four digs, and the SJO squad's offensive firing on all cylinders, stretched a two-point lead to a 17-point advantage.
Addie Roesch led the Spartans' attack with eight kills and three aces. The junior also had five digs. Shayne Immke smashed five kills and Josey Frerichs piled on four more in the 2-0 victory. Peyton Williams was in excellent form notching seven kills and contributing a pair of aces.
The SJO squad, who won the first set 25-13 and the second 25-9, never trailed on the scoreboard in either of the two games.
Taylor Hug contributed 24 assists and chalked up three digs in the non-conference win.
Spartan tennis team schooled at Central
Despite eventually dropping both sets, St. Joseph-Ogden's Abby Dow, Addison Seggebruch, and Jessica Gadbury won two or more games for the Spartan tennis team in their away match against Champaign Central. SJO lost the dual match, 9-0, against the twin city team. Playing on the #1 court for the Spartans, Dow fell 6-2, 6-0 against Mariclare 0'Gorman, the area's top prep player. Seggebruch won three games in the first set in her singles match against Sarah Su to finish, 6-3, 6-0. Gadbury at #6 singles lost to Savannah Stortzum, 6-2, 6-4. The Unity soccer team returned to Tolono with a loss after the team's road match at Hoopeston Area on Monday. The Rockets were shutout, 3-0. Down 2-0 at the half, the Cornjerkers (9-5-1) added a third score with 11 minutes left in the match courtesy of Talan Gredy-Nelson to secure the win. The Rockets hope to break their losing streak tonight with a win against visiting St. Joseph-Ogden. Hoopeston Area senior Cameron Zorn scored the first goal of the contest, and Owen Root, a junior, put the second ball between the posts on a pass from Gabe Joneikis. Zorns was credited with the assist on the third strike. Dylan Judy was the winning keeper, recording just two saves against Unity.Attention area high school coaches

Cornjerkers suffer heartbreaking loss
WATSEKA - The Hoopeston Area basketball team dropped their first conference game of the season to Milford at the Watseka Christmas Tournament on Thursday. Despite seven players contributing to the final outcome, the Cornjerkers (4-6, 1-1) came up short, 70-67. Anthony Zamora led Hoopeston's scoring effort with 19 points. Preston VanDeVeer finished the night with a 13-point effort. Kendrick Sigrill, who hauled down 12 rebounds, and Wyatt Eisenman chipped in 12 points apiece. Owen Root added another 8 points, Mason Rush finished with 2 points, and Ethan Steiner added one more in the conference loss. Cornjerkers continue their quest at the Watseka tournament facing St. Anne tomorrow.
Hug drains 5 treys
BISMARCK - St. Joseph-Ogden Taylor Hug led all scorers with a game-high 19 points in her team's 50-31 win over Bismarck-Henning. The senior was also a perfect 2-for-2 from the free throw line. She swished a three-pointer in every quarter except for the third, where she drained an extra. Teammate Addison Frick hit three shots from behind the arc on her way to a 12-point finish for the Spartans. Addie Martinie contributed 12 points, and Addie Seggebruch rounded out the team's scoring effort with nine points. The road win improves SJO's season record to 4-6. The Spartans travel to Pleasant Plains on Saturday for another non-conference contest.Uni-High falls to Salt Fork at home

Hoopeston Area falls to St. Anne
SJO girls win shootout game
ST. JOSEPH - Addisyn Martinie buried five three-pointers to finish with a team-high 21 points in St. Joseph-Ogden's 49-39 win over Arthur-Lovington-Atwood Hammond at the Country Financial Shootout on Saturday.
Martinie sunk the first bucket from behind the arc, and SJO never relinquished the lead, at one point by as may as 15 points, the entire game.
The Spartans utilized three other scorers besides Martinie in the victory. Senior Addison Seggebruch finished with 13 points, Addison Frick contributed 11 points, and Katie Ericksen rounded out the squad's scoring effort with four points.
7-0 Rockets are all-systems-go
Pleasant Plains - The Unity basketball team continues to fly high above the competition this season, picking up their seventh win cruising past Pleasant Plains 56-33.
Unity out-rebounded the Cardinals 27-24 and logged 12 steals, remaining undefeated. The Rockets are on the road with six more games to play before the new year.
Rockets misfire at Mt. Zion
MT. ZION - Raegen Stringer scored Unity's only field goal in the second quarter during their road game with the Lady Braves on Saturday. The hiccup allowed Mt. Zion to prevail, 41-28.
Stringer then went on to score 11 points in the second half, finishing with 15 points. Addison Ray chipped in six points, Reagan Little hit two buckets in the first quarter for four points, and Lauren Haas coverted three free throws to round out the Rockets' scoring effort.
Little led the team's rebounding effort with seven boards.
Tigers win two on Saturday
Carbondale - The Urbana basketball team started a two-game win streak on Saturday at the Carbondale Showcase. Despite a 29-point spree by Commanche freshman Donald Collier, the Tigers won their opener over Cahokia, 78-68.
Later, Urbana knocked off Carbondale, 68-66. Terriers' Decarl Payne led his team's scoring effort with 31 points against the Tigers (3-5).
The Urbana boys basketball team plays their next game on January 5 when they host Bloomington High School in a Big 12 match-up.

Area wrestlers earn All-Conference recognition
St. Thomas More's Brody Cuppernell tries to avoid a takedown attempt by Unity's Hunter Eastin during the IHSA 190-pound championship match at State Farm Center on Saturday. URBANA - Eleven wrestlers from Unity and eight from St. Joseph-Ogden were selected by coaches and named to the Illini Prairie 2023-2024 all-conference teams. Later today, the Rockets wrestle against the Shells of Roxana for a spot in tomorrow's semifinal round at Grossinger Motors Arena. The season also continues for Unity's Phoenix Molina, who is competing in the girls' IHSA wrestling championship, also at the arena.
