BLOOMINGTON - Coming into this season, head coach Savanna Bennett led the South Elgin cheerleading program to one team title and a pair of third-place finishes in the competitive cheer state series. Bennett capped her seventh season at the program's helm with another team title last Saturday at Grossinger Motors Arena.

The Storm pulled no punches with a near-perfect routine during Friday's preliminary round, finishing above Highland, Stevenson, and Conant in hot pursuit of this year's Coed Team title. Earning a 97.20 from judges, South Elgin was a clear favorite heading into Saturday's finals.

Leaving it all out on the mat on Saturday, the 24-member team took home the program's second title in five seasons (2020 was the first), improving their prelim performance with a score of 97.60. Following them in the final standings were runner-up Conant (96.18) and Belvidere North (95.54) finished in third place.

Also finishing in the top ten this season was Highland (94.44) in fourth place, Dundee-Crown (93.60) in fifth, Shepard (92.64) in sixth, Stevenson (91.80) in seventh place, and Homewood-Flossmoor (89.00) in eighth place. Palatine (86.26) and St. Charles North (85.82) finished ninth and tenth, respectively.

This year's championship varsity squad members are Aubriunna Rosa, Nevaeh Poole, Adelyn Logsdon, Isavella Napoles, Sophia Catania, Katie Solis, Kyra Clark, Paige Vargas, Bridget Lucas, Kirsten Cones, Emma Salazar, Adriana Jimenez, Taylor Davis, Kylie Rogowski, Emma Steinhofer, Bella Meloun, Morgan Stokes, Bryan Estrada, Greta Zelaitis, Stewart William Jr., Maya Jovanovic, Stella Shah, Kaelyn Lindsay, and Hunter Lindsay.

The Illinois High School Cheerleading Coaches Organization named seniors Taylor Davis and Bryan Estrada to this season's All-State Coed Team.

Kathryn Ciolli and Savannah Swayze are assistant coaches for the state champs.

Storm fans were ecstatic about the team's title victory.

"So proud of them! Such a great group," Jamie Smiley-Jovanovic wrote on the South Elgin High School Cheer Facebook page.

Diane Martin added, "Well deserved!!! Way to bring that title back! This program is amazing."

"This title means everything. This team has come so far this season. They had their ups and downs," said fifth-year head coach Bree Grady-Simpson with an abundance of pride and respect for her athletes. "They committed and trusted each other. To come out on top just means the world to our program and our community."

Grady-Simpson has led the storied program for the past 11 years. Under her management as head coach, the program finished as runner-up in 2021 and last year. Saturday's dominance on the mat would not have happened without seniors Avery Taylor and Fawne Ford.

"We have two seniors who stepped into big shoes for us last season," Grady-Simpson said. "They held down the fort. They trusted me as a coach. They trusted my coaching staff and committed to everything we wanted to be. Their leadership was, both on and off the mat, for the rest of the athletes on our team was incredible this season."

The 20-member squad includes Emma Fedorovich, Hailey Borner, Morgan Sadelski, Jordan Cryer, Allyson Fluder, Ella Phelan, Ella Mierzwa, Kelsey Schmidt, Fawne Ford, Victoria Swanstrom, Grace Markun, Ashley Wrublik, Avaree Taylor, Molly Wallace, Melanie Wallace, Claire Auw, Samantha DuVall, Mia Fedoroich, Natalie Oprondek, and Tessa Preuss. Claudia DeSantis, Keri Storako, and Candice Kehr assisted Grady-Simpson.

Lemont won the sectional title, beating Evergreen Park by nearly three points. Providence Catholic ended up 3rd, and Oak Forest 4th at sectionals.

A week later, in the preliminary round at Grossinger Motors Arena, the cheer squad finished the first day with a near-perfect score of 96.78. Chasing them on the leaderboard were Burlington Central with a 94.42, Antioch in third at 94.30, Grayslake Central earned a 93.64 in fourth place, and Crystal Lake Central, with a 93.04, rounded out the division's top five.

The next day, Lemont nearly lit the mat on fire with their high-energy and explosive routine. The fourth contestant to perform on Saturday, the squad executed every stunt with confidence and precision. The team earned a 97.94 to outdistance runner-up Burlington Central (95.16) and Crystal Lake Central (93.42), who vaulted from fifth in the prelim to third.

Coming fourth place was Antioch (93.30), followed by Grayslake Central (92.50) in fifth, and Morris finished in sixth place with a 92.06. Also finishing in the top ten was Lakes (90.42) in seventh place and Normal U-High (89.92), who edged out Cary-Grove (89.56) in eighth place. Benet Academy (88.58) finished tenth.

Along with Lemont, only four other schools have advanced to the IHSA Competitive Cheerleading State Finals since the sport's adoption by the IHSA in 2006. Conant, Lockport, Oak Forest, and Sandburg have not missed a season, making the trek to the state final held in Bloomington. One bit of trivia: Lemont is the only cheerleading program to have finished in the top ten each year since 2006.

"Right now, we will enjoy this moment," Grady-Simpson said. "Moving forward, we will keep fighting, we will keep pushing, we keep raising the bar for our own program and the entire state of Illinois."

On the job: Five awesome ways make your employees feel appreciated

Make a point to know about the underappreciated professionals in your life, so you can recognize events like birthdays, work anniversaries and other dates that hold special personal meaning.
Family Features - Unsung heroes make everyday living possible. They work behind the scenes and tackle some of the most demanding work imaginable, such as maintaining facilities and keeping them in tip-top condition.

You can show your appreciation for deserving workers such as your favorite school custodians or office maintenance staff members in numerous ways, including these suggestions from Rubbermaid Commercial Products, supporters of cleaning and maintenance professionals nationwide.

Write Thank You Notes
In today's digital world, handwritten notes are a novelty. The times may be changing, but the impression a thoughtful handwritten message leaves behind hasn't changed at all. Keep a supply of blank notecards so you can offer notes to those who make a difference in your life. The sentiments don't need to be long; a simple expression of gratitude is enough to brighten someone's day.

Participate in Appreciation Events
You might receive information from local schools or businesses about opportunities to support maintenance staff, such as hosting meals or helping with cleanup in classrooms or offices. Finding opportunities to support underappreciated custodial staff can allow community members to show thanks in meaningful ways.

For example, Rubbermaid Commercial Products is hosting a Behind the Scenes of Clean Campaign this fall to elevate, recognize and thank cleaning and facility maintenance professionals who are among the first to arrive for work each day. The campaign includes more than 40 events globally where community members can engage with and personally thank custodians who are making an everyday difference behind the scenes.

Recognize Milestones
Often, those in custodial roles blend into the fabric of everyday life. They're rarely the focal point of celebrations, but often make it possible for others to honor special occasions. Make a point to know about the underappreciated professionals in your life, so you can recognize events like birthdays, work anniversaries and other dates that hold special personal meaning.

Do Your Part
Think about what small steps you can take to make unsung heroes' jobs easier. That might mean picking up after yourself or cleaning up a mess in your workspace. It could involve wiping down your table after lunch. Little gestures can add up to a big difference.

Lead By Example
You don't need to wait for others to join you in recognizing workers whose impacts are made behind the scenes. Speaking up and taking action can serve as a positive example for those around you. You can even take the lead and organize an effort to recognize individuals who rarely receive thanks, such as the custodian at your office or the janitorial team at your favorite retailer.

Learn how to show your appreciation and get inspired by visiting the Rubbermaid Commercial Products website.

5 timeless Valentine's Day gift ideas

CongerDesign/Pixabay
Family Features - On a day that signifies the importance of love and companionship, many people find it rewarding to show their loved ones just how much they mean. If you're in the gift-giving spirit this Valentine's Day, you may find a bit of inspiration with these ideas.

Just remember, whether you're celebrating the relationship with your significant other or showing appreciation for a friend, the best gifts come from the heart.

* Food - If your partner is a foodie, a Valentine's Day date is an obvious choice. Make a reservation at his or her favorite restaurant or opt for takeout and enjoy quiet time together in the comfort of home. Satisfy that special someone's sweet tooth with a classic box of chocolates or create a personalized candy basket full of guilty pleasures.

* Jewelry - Whether you've been together a year, a decade or more, it's a perfect opportunity to splurge for a gift he or she will cherish for a lifetime. Necklaces, bracelets, earrings, anklets, watches and more all make for perfect gifts that can often be customized with engravings like names or important dates.

* Experiences - Oftentimes, the gift of moments together means more than a trinket. Consider the things you enjoy doing side by side and schedule a day or weekend to do nothing but your favorite activities. Book a tour at a local museum, find tickets to the next big game, sit frontstage for a favorite band or road trip to a nearby attraction for new sights and sounds.

* Subscriptions - Gifts don't always need to be sentimental. Sometimes, they can be downright practical. Creating an account for a new streaming service or music platform, signing up for monthly food or wine gift boxes and buying ticket packages for a favorite local team are all gifts that keep on giving.

* Handwritten Notes and Flowers - Take time to write what you appreciate most about your special someone - personality traits, favorite memories, thoughtful gestures and why they're important to you - and pair your note with favorite flowers. Gifts may spark a smile, but sharing a moment of connection offers a reminder of what you're celebrating in the first place.
