Area runners finished in the top spots at the Mountain Goat race

OAKWOOD - One hundred and thirty-nine runners took part in this year's KRR Mountain Goat trail race last Saturday. The 37th installment of the race featured three separate events. Runners could choose to run a 15K (3 loops), 10K (2 loops), or 5K (1 loop) race.

Justin Jones of St. Joseph won the 15K run, finishing his three laps in 54 minutes and 21 seconds. The win comes on the heels of a third-place overall finish at Siberian Express held in January Kennukuk State Park.

The Mountain Goat is one of 24 races in the East Central Illinois annual race circuit. The next race in the series is the Clinton Trails Ultra on March 30. Organizers will host two events this year for long-distance runners, a 30-miler, which starts at 7 am, and a 10-miler starts at 8 am.

24 area runners compete at Siberian Express

OAKWOOD - It was 33.8º when the starter's gun signaled the start of the 36th installment of the Siberian Express trail race at Kickapoo Park on Saturday. Running across lightly snow-covered ground and through muddy ruts, 146 runners finished this 7.45 mile race.

The Sentinel's top area finisher was St. Joseph's Justin Jones. Finishing first in the 30-39 year-old division, he was the third runner out of the field to cross the finish line, turning in a sub-hour time of 51 minutes.

The top womens' competitor was Sarka Petrickova, from Urbana, who took first in the Womens 30 - 39 group and 29th overall. She completed the course 1 hour, six minutes, and 45 seconds.

Other area runners included Jared Chenoweth, finishing third in the Mens 40 - 49 group and 13th overall. Luke Morrison crossed the line second in the Mens 20 - 29 group and 25th overall. Scott Tess finished seventh in the Mens 40 - 49 group and 32th overall. Chenoweth finish the race at 1:01:52, Morrison at 1:05:41, and Tess clocked in 1:07:57.

Four runners from The Sentinel area competed in the Womens 30 - 39 age group. Nicole Olson finished in second place and was 35th overall. She crossed the finish line at 1:09:06. Urbana's Olga Makarova finished the course at 1:24:37, good for fifth place in the division and 70th overall. Ellen Vore, also from Urbana, finished eighth and 128th overall with a time of 1:52:23. Coming in ninth was Nikki Campbell at 1:55:57 for a 141th overall.

There were five area runners in the Womens 40 - 49 division. Kaura Owen, from Sadorus, finished 13th and 120th overall at 1:44:07. Shonda Barto finished 14th in the Womens 40 - 49 group and 134th overall. The Philo resident clocked in at 1:53:43.

Jennifer White, from Savoy, and Sidney's Brooke DiBello finished seventh and tenth, respectively. White finish the race at 1:11:19, 46th overall. DiBello was 59th overall after crossing the line at 1 hour, 19 minutes and 09 seconds. Urbana's Anne Sickles completed the run 1:33:47. She finished 101th overall and 12th.

Brian Barto, from Philo, ran the course under two hours, finishing at 1:53:46. He was 17th in the Mens 40 - 49 group and 136th overall.

Mark Dixon led the 50-59 men to the finish line, running a 1:11:12 to finish sixth in the group. He was 45th overall. Following the Urbana resident over the line almost 20 minutes later, Steve Darling, from Oakwood, finished 16th in the division and 93th overall with a time of 1:31:41. Christopher Korose finished 97th overall at 1:32:11. He carved out a 17th place in the divison.

Savoy's Nancy Roth also braved the chilly running conditions, turning in a time under the two hour mark. She finished fifth in the Womens 60 & up division and 119th overall at 1:44:06.

Robert Ogden completed the course 1:19:38. The Sidney resident finished eighth in the Mens 40 - 49 group and 61st overall.

Urbana's Brenda Straka finished first in the Womens 20 - 29 group and 73th overall. She stop the clock at 1:24:50.

Elizabeth Withers-Sickles ran the course in 1 hour, 24 minutes, and 54 seconds. She came in fourth in the Womens 19 & under and 74th overall.

Hugh Bowman rounded the list of area runners. He finished 16th in the Mens 30 - 39 group and 71th overall at 1:24:38.

The Siberian Express is the first race each year in the Kennekuk Road Runners annual race series.

St. Joseph-Ogden 3rd Quarter Honor Roll

ST. JOSEPH - Last week, St. Joseph-Ogden High School announced the third-quarter Honor Roll and High Honor Roll recipients. Over 270 students at the high school earned third-quarter Honor Roll recognition.

To make the honor roll at SJO, students must earn a grade point average of 3.25 or higher on a 4.0 scale. Students whose GPA soared above 3.74 are recognized as High Honor Roll students.

St. Joseph-Ogden fall 2023 Honor Roll students

ST. JOSEPH - At the end of October, St. Joseph-Ogden High School announced the first quarter Honor Roll and High Honor Roll recipients. Nearly 300 members of this year's school population earned first-quarter Honor Roll recognition.

A look back at the SJO 5K

PhotoNews Media has covered nearly every SJO 5K race since its humble beginning in 2008. This weekend will be no exception when the starter's gun fires this Saturday at 7:30 am on Main Street signalling the start to this year's race.

Despite its growing competitive field of runners each year featuring some of the best distance athletes across several age categories, the SJO 5k has an incredibly family friendly, supportive atmosphere.

Proceeds from the event supports the St. Joseph Middle School and St. Joseph-Ogden High School girls and boys cross country and track teams. Revenue from entry fees help pay for uniforms, warm-ups, travel expenses and other costs incurred during the season.

August 9, 2014 - St. Joseph, IL - Chelsea Blaase runs to the women's overall title at the 2014 SJO 5K. Blaase, who finished the course with a time of 17:07.2, won her fourth consecutive women's title at the race. Over 270 St. Joseph-Ogden students earn 2nd quarter academic honors

ST. JOSEPH - Last week, St. Joseph-Ogden High School announced the second-quarter Honor Roll and High Honor Roll recipients. Just over 270 members of this year's enrollment earned second-quarter Honor Roll recognition.

To receive honor roll recognition at SJO, students must earn a grade point average of 3.25 or higher on a 4.0 scale. Students whose GPA soared above 3.74 are recognized as High Honor Roll students.

Immke, Wagner advance to state wrestling championships

A pair St. Joseph-Ogden wrestlers advanced to this weekend's Illinois High School Association Individual Wrestling State Finals that will start this Thursday.

Isaiah Immke, who had a first round bye and lost opening sectional match to Dwight's Daniel Gutierrez (45-5) by fall, punched his ticket into the division finals after defeating Tremont's Levi Leitner with pin at 1:54. Immke picked up his 20th win of the season with the third-place finish in the 145-pound division on Saturday.

After his loss to Guiterrez and before locking up with Leitner, Immke went on a three-bout winning spree defeating Marshall Gudauskus from Bismarck-Henning-Rossville-Alvin, Mercer County's Carson Tippie and Hoopeston Area foe Justin Jones. Finishing the day 4-1, the junior won two of his matches via pins with the highest finish for SJO.

Fellow junior AJ Wagner also advanced to wrestle at the State Farm Center this weekend in the 113-pound division. He heads into the state championships with 41 wins and 8 losses.

Wagner leveled the competition in his first two matches with first period pins and dropped a decision to against Mercer County's Broctyn King in his third bout of the day.

In his next match, it took a mere 31 seconds to notch his consolation round semifinal win over Peoria Notre Dame's Jac Couri (26-8).

Guaranteed to advance to state and at least a fourth place trophy after the quick win over Couri, Wagner squared off with Illini Bluffs' Paul Ishikawa. Through no lack of Spartan effort Wagner succumbed to the Tiger grappler in a 3-1 decision.

One other St. Joseph-Ogden wrestler also competed at the Olympia sectional. Sophomore Isaiah Moore, who enjoyed a 30-plus win season with the Spartans, won his first sectional match in the 126-pound weight class sticking Tremont's Logan Poisal in 25 seconds.

Moore then dropped his quarterfinal match as well as his consolation bracket rounder to finish his season at 32-13.

First Street, Room 1000, in Champaign. General public tickets are being sold on a first come, first serve basis.

The Class 1A preliminary matches will start at noon with admission starting at 11am.

URBANA - It was a perfect day to run the Christie Clinic Illinois Marathon on Saturday. The weather was just what Urbana's Will Gravelle and former Unity Rocket long distance runner Nick Godsell needed to finish in the top 20 of this year's half marathon event.

Godsell finished 12th overall and finished in the same spot in the men's division. His time of one hour and 15.02 minutes was good for a third place out of 141 men between the ages of 25-29. Gravelle crossed the finish line eight runners later at 1:16:40 in 20th place overall and fifth in the same age group.

The Sentinel area's top female finisher Jordyn Catterson, from Urbana, clocked in at 1:29:34. She finished 104th overall and came in third in the women's 25-29 age group.

Catterson, with Godsell and Gravelle were members of the 217 area runners from the 2-1-7, who laced-up and finished the 13.1 mile course out of 2,178 competitors.

Saturday's overall champion title was Johnny Crain, from Lansing, MI, who finished the course in one hour and 5.05 minutes. Ten seconds behind Crain, Charleston's Jaime Marcos crossed over at 1:05:15 in second place. Devin Allbaugh, from Bettendorf, IA, finished third at 1:06:07.

28-year-old Jane Bareikis won the women's title with a time of 1:16:13. The Crestwood, IL, runner finished 18th overall.

Coming in second place, Pasca Myers averaged six-minute splits to finish her race at 1:18:37. Elizabeth Flatley, from Chicago, took third, stopping her race clock at 1:19:17.
