Illinois linebacker named to Allstate Wuerffel Trophy watch list

SNS - In the fast-paced world of college football, it's easy to get lost in the shuffle of stats, scores, and standout plays. Last week, University of Illinois linebacker Kenenna Odeluga was named to the 2024 watch list for the Allstate Wuerffel Trophy by the Wuerffel Foundation and the National College Football Awards Association (NCFAA) on Thursday. A rising star, he has made a name for himself as a force both in the game and in the community, embodying the true spirit of a student-athlete.

In 2024, he was nominated for the prestigious Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, a testament to their dedication beyond the gridiron. This honor recognizes players who have made a significant impact in their communities, and Odeluga has certainly earned it. A two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection (2022 and 2023), he has consistently excelled in the classroom, balancing the demands of academics and athletics.

Last summer, Odeluga embarked on a mission trip to Africa, an experience that left an indelible mark. There, he not only contributed to various service projects but also connected with local communities, gaining a deeper understanding of global issues and the power of compassion.

Back home, Odeluga has been a familiar face at the Carle Foundation Hospital, where he visited children battling illnesses, spreading joy and offering support to families in need. His community service extends to helping build a garden at the Salvation Army, a project aimed at providing fresh produce to those in need. He also worked with DREAAM, engaging with kids during the organization's community service events and helping to create a positive and uplifting environment.

In January 2024, Odeluga attended the Black Student Athlete Summit in Los Angeles, where he connected with professionals and athletic faculty members from across the nation. This gathering, which brought together 1,500 student-athletes, offered a unique opportunity for networking and personal growth.

As a member of the Illinois Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), Odeluga serves as a representative for the football program. In this role, they've been actively involved in various athletics community initiatives, advocating for their peers and helping to shape the future of Illinois athletics.

Odeluga has proven time and time again that he is more than just a standout player on the field. As a leader and a compassionate individual, he is using his education and knowledge to make a difference.

Illinois volleyball starter receives Big Ten preseason honors

SNS - In a testament to her remarkable talent and dedication, Illinois outside hitter Raina Terry has been named to the Big Ten Preseason Honors list, the league announced on Thursday. Terry stands out among the 18 student-athletes from the conference selected for this prestigious accolade, solidifying her place as one of the most formidable players in collegiate volleyball.

Terry concluded her senior season in spectacular fashion, leading the Big Ten with a staggering 618 total points and finishing third with 539 total kills. Her exceptional performance didn't stop there; she ranked sixth nationally with an impressive 4.69 kills per set and seventh in the country with 5.37 points per set. Within the conference, she placed second in both categories, highlighting her dominance on the court. By the end of 2023, these marks ranked eighth and ninth in the nation, respectively, underscoring her consistent excellence throughout the season.

In conference play alone, Terry's stats were equally impressive. She averaged 5.41 points per set, placing her second in the Big Ten, and 4.72 kills per set, securing the third spot in the league. Additionally, she showcased her versatility with a strong service game, ranking 10th in the conference with 0.37 aces per set and recording 28 service aces, the fifth-best total in the Big Ten.

Terry's ability to deliver in high-pressure situations was evident throughout the season. She recorded 10 matches with 20 or more kills, including seven against conference rivals, and notched three double-doubles. Her consistency was a driving force for the Illini, leading the team in kills in 28 of their 30 matches in 2023.

The Marengo, Ohio, native reached a significant milestone on Senior Night against Michigan, becoming the first player in the Big Ten to surpass 500 kills last season. In a standout performance against Ohio State, Terry recorded a career-high 28 kills in just four sets, showcasing her offensive prowess and ability to carry the team in crucial moments.

After an illustrious four-year career with the Illini, Terry ranks 10th all-time in program history with 1,634 career kills, nestled between AVCA All-America honorable mention Megan Cooney and 2020 Olympic gold medalist Michelle Bartsch-Hackley. Additionally, she stands fourth all-time with 164 career aces, cementing her legacy as one of the program's greats.

2024 Illinois Media Class 1A All-State boys' basketball team

URBANA - The roster of players for the 2024 Illinois All-State boys basketball team for Class 1A was released today. Tuscola's Jordan Quinn was the only area player that earned attention from voting media representatives from around the state.

The Illinois Media is a group consisting of sportswriters and broadcasters from different parts of the state. They selected five players for the first team and five players for the second team in each class. The players have received five points for a first-team vote and three points for a second-team vote.

65 players earn 2A IBCA All-State recognition

BEDFORD PARK - The Illlinois Basketball Coaches Association released this year's Class 2A all-state team selections today. Only one local player, Unity standoutRaegen Stringer, received a nod from the prep coaches' association.

Stringer, who will continue her basketball career at Illinois College, averaged 15.5 points, four steals, and four assists per game. The Rocket was named to the third team.
