Spartan soccer team loses battle at STM

St. Joseph-Ogden defender Garrett Siems pushes the ball up the field in the second half. The Spartans fell 2-0 to the Sabers on the road on Thursday. Siems and his SJO teammates, with a record of 8 wins, 3 losses and a tie, hit the field again for a non-conference contest at Georgetown-Ridgefarm on Saturday, September 24. Match time scheduled for 9a. Then on Monday, the team will host Judah Christian with the opening touch at 4:30pm. See more photos from this game.

Winning style; Urbana sweeps SJO in first home match of the season

Urbana's Alisa Tangmunarunkit lines up a shot while playing on the #1 singles court against St. Joseph-Ogden's Abbey Dowell during the team's first home match yesterday. Tangmunarunkit won the protracted battle 6-2, 6-3. After a short rest, she returned to the court at #1 doubles match with partner Luna Morales. The pair defeated Spartans duo Katie McDermott and Lilly Rice, 6-1, 6-1. The Tigers won the non-conference match, 9-0.

100 participate at MLK Walk for Peace in Urbana

Just over one hundred people joined together to walk from Crestwood Park to Larson Park in Urbana for the MLK Walk of Peace on Monday. The event, commemorating the life and sacrifice of the Reverend Martin Luther King, was co-sponsored by the City of Urbana, HV Neighborhood Transformation, Housing Authority of Champaign County/Youth Build, The Urbana Free Library, the Urbana Park District, and the Urbana Rotary Club. "We know the sacrifices he and countless others made for the betterment of us as African-Americans and society itself," said Maurice Hayes, Executive Director of HV Neighborhood Transformations. "So often, our kids are misled by the wrong things. It will take us as adults in the room to lead them in a different direction to prosperity and to grow success."

With about 300 meters to go, Chelsea Blaase, on the right, and Sidney Long are splashed, per their request, with water by a race volunteer while running in the Gifford 5K on June 27. The race was the first in what festival organizers hope to become an annual tradition in conjunction with the Gifford Community Festival.
