Girls' Basketball

Champaign Central 58 - Rantoul 50
The Maroons had three players finish their non-conference home game finish in double figures. The win improving Central's record to 3-5.

Junior Khalia Williams led the team with 15 points and seven rebounds. Samara McArthur finished with 12 points and five boards. Meanwhile, senior Alex Parastaran collected 10 points while dishing out a team-high nine assists and snatching five steals.

Thursday night, Williams and the Maroons host Danville (4-7) in a Big Twelve conference contest.


Oakwood 42 - Armstrong 45
Down 28-17 at the half, Oakwood made up the deficit in the second half but came up short, taking a loss in Vermilion Valley Conference play. Bella Bradford scored a team-high 14 points in the Comets' road game on Tuesday. Fellow senior Rylee Wright finished the loss with ten points.

Boys' Basketball

Champaign Central 71 - Unity 59
Chris Bush drained 19 points and collected six rebounds in the Maroons' road game at Unity (3-3). Sophomore Cayden Love shined, scoring 18 points to bolster Central's record to 5-3.

The Maroons travel to Decatur to take on the Eisenhower (4-4).


Hoopeston 46 - Cissna Park 44
Brayden Walder delivered 16 points in Hoopeston Area's VVC non-conference win over Cissna Park (3-8).

Cole Miller, who scored four points, had eight rebounds. Trenton Montez, a senior, also finished with eight boards along with seven points.

The Cornjerkers play at home on Friday, hosting the Storm of Salt Fork.


Urbana 51 - Sacred Heart-Griffin 79
The Cyclones handed the Tigers their fourth-consecutive loss. Urbana looks to improve their early-season record after Friday's road game at Peoria Notre Dame.
St. Thomas More 55 - Clifton Central 60
The Sabers (4-6) were outscored 8-3 in the overtime period by the Comets (7-4).

St. Thomas More is back in action on Saturday at the Eureka College Shootout where they will face Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley.

High energy, Spartan volleyball team start 2024 season with a win

ST. JOSEPH - Tinley Ideus leaps in the air while celebrating a point for St. Joseph-Ogden during third-set action against Maroa-Forsyth at home on Monday. The Spartans continued their rally to defeat the Trojans in their season opener 26-24, 19-25, 25-20. Ideus led the SJO's offensive effort with seven kills and eight digs. Prep Sport Notebook | Catching up on area scores and performances


Undefeated St. Joseph-0gden basketball top seed at State Farm tournament

BLOOMINGTON - The SJO boys basketball team is seeded #3 in this year's edition of the State Farm Holiday Classic basketball tournament. Last year's small school champs was one of six schools that received #1 seed votes. The Spartans (5-0) open tournament play on December 27 against East Dubuque at Normal West.

The top seed went to Aurora Christian with four first-place votes. Normal University High secured one vote and is the #2 seed. El Paso-Gridley, the #4 seed, received one vote. St. Joseph-Ogden received three first-place votes from a poll of head coaches, the media, and committee members.


Spartan girls draw tough first round seed

BLOOMINGTON - The St. Joseph-Ogden girls basketball team is back in the field of competition at the State Farm Holiday Classic. Senior Addison Frick and the Spartans (2-3) play their first game 20 days from today against #4 seed Bishop McNamara (7-1) at Normal Community.

This year's top small-school girls seeds are Camp Point Central/Augusta Southeastern in the #1 position and Paris at #2. The Panthers beat the Tigers in last year's championship game, 36-32. Galena earned the #3 spot, and Bishop McNamara was voted #4 in the poll given to coaches, media around the state, and committee members.

SJO is scheduled to play at 10:30 am on the Wednesday after Christmas.


Cornjerkers post second win of the season

Hoopeston Area 52 - Armstrong Potomac 45
GIBSON CITY - Owen Root scored 14 points in Bismarck-Henning's win over Armstrong-Potomac. Mason Rush and Kendrick Sigerill scored 11 points each. Root and Sigerill led the team on the boards with six rebounds apiece. Wyatt Eisenman chipped in eight points and tallied three of the team seven steals at the GCMS Thanksgiving Tournament.


Spartan girls suffer home loss

Paris 44 - St. Joseph-Ogden 38
ST. JOSEPH - Three SJO players tallied double figures in the scorebook, but it was enough to surpass their extended meeting with the visiting Tigers on November 11.

Junior Katie Erickson led the Spartan effort with 12 points in the overtime effort. Addison Frick connected drained three treys and a jumper for ll points and Addisyn Martinie contributed ten points in the loss.


Tigers' season starts with road loss

OLYMPIA FIELDS - The Urbana boys' varsity basketball team lost their road opener to Manley at Rich Central, 76-72.


Seggebruch leads Spartans in first win of the season

St. Joseph-Ogden 61 - Tuscola 47
ST. JOSEPH - SJO's A-Team came together rolling over the visiting Warriors for their first win of the season. Addison Seggebruch scored a team-high 14 points on her home court on November 11. Addisyn Martinie finished with 12 points, and Addison Frick rounded out the top three scorers with 10 points. The Spartans made nearly half their total points from outside the arc, hitting nine three-pointers in the non-conference game.

Sicily Moss led Tuscola's effort with 16 points across all four frames. The loss broke a four-game win streak for the Warriors and remains their only loss as of today.


Prep Sport Notebook | Hall big on the boards for Urbana, Unity loses first game

URBANA - Janae Hall hauled in nine of her team's 28 rebounds in Urbana's 51-10 loss to visiting MacArthur on Thursday.

"Urbana was shorthanded tonight but worked hard," said head coach Bobby Boykin.

Hall and newcomer Zion Reid finished with just four points apiece on offense. Freshman Lai'yonna Harper rounded out the Tigers' scoring effort with a field goal.

Urbana hosts Mahomet-Seymour in a non-conference contest on Monday.


Rockets suffer first loss
GIBSON CITY - Raegen Stringer exploded in the second half of Unity's Lady Falcon/Bunnie Tip Off game against Tri-Valley scoring 12 of her 18 points. Her effort was not enough to overcome the 13-point halftime deficit against the Vikings on Thursday night, which resulted in the Rockets' first loss of the season, 42-28.

Addison Ray finished with six points and six rebounds, while Reagan Little, credited with six boards and four steals, was held to a third quarter field goal for two points. Stringer added four rebounds, three steal, and two assists to her season stats.

Claire Meharry and Lauren Haas each sank a free throw to detail UHS' scoring effort. Haas' defensive effort produced five rebounds and two steals. She also dished out five assists.

Tri-Valley (3-0) had three players in double figures. Sophomore Addy Friehaut led her team's effort with 13 points, Kelsey Bartels added 11 points, and Cadence Geiser scored eight fourth quarter points to finish with ten total.

Prep Sports Notebook | Urbana drops home opener

URBANA - The Urbana girls' basketball team opened their 2023-24 campaign with a loss at home on Tuesday. While playing a defensively solid game, the Tigers' offensive effort fell short in the 35-14 loss.

Aziyaha Davis led UHS' scoring effort with six points, four produced in the final quarter of the game. Zion Reid and Janae Hall came off the bench to hit a field goal and sink one free throw to finish with three points apiece.

The Tiger varsity squad is back in action tonight, hosting McArthur at 7pm.

Rockets open season with win over PBL
Back again at the Lady Falcon/Bunnie Tip Off, the Unity girls' basketball team notched tipped off the season with a 51-27 win over Paxton-Buckley-Loda.

Raegen Stringer led the Rockets with 18 points and six steals. Addison Ray contributed another 13 points in the rout. Ray and Meredith Reed had six rebounds apiece in Unity's total haul of 32.

UHS was up 24-9 at the half and kept the foot of the gas, adding another 27 points in the second half.


Two area players earn All-State recognition

St. Joseph-Ogden's Logan Smith and Unity's Brock Suding were named All-State players by the Illinois High School Football Coaches Association earlier this week.

Suding, a 6-foot, 195-pound linebacker was key in Rockets' postseason run. Averaging 13 tackles per game, he led Unity to 9-3 and was the anchor on a defense that allowed opponents just 259 points in 12 games. The senior also saw playing time as a running back, carrying the ball 13 times for 72 yards.

Smith, the Illini Praire Conference's most explosive signal caller, threw the ball 269 time for 2,686 yards, topping his 2022-23 stat of 2,582 yards. In addition to the two-year starter's 5,268 total passing yards, he also amassed 796 rushing yards in his 22 varsity appearances. The senior ran in 20 touchdowns and passed for 29 this season.

Prep Sports Notebook | Area prep football and volleyball gets underway

Williams serves notice
ST. JOSEPH - Peyton Williams gave a serving clinic last Wednesday notching five aces against visiting St. Anne. The Spartans dominated all aspects of the game against the Cardinals to earn their second win of the season, 2-0.

Williams was credited with seven kills across two sets and had three digs to help SJO defensively. Senior Addie Roesch delivered another six kills and chalked up four digs. Halle Brazelton kept the ball in play with her five digs and distributed 13 assist for the Spartans.


Seggebruch steps up
BISMARCK - Junior Ava Seggebruch hammered four kills to help St. Joseph-Ogden pick up win number 3 this season via 25-12, 29-27 win over host Bismarck-Henning. Once again, Peyton Williams led the Spartans' offensive effort amassing seven kills, two aces, and six digs. Fellow senior Addie Roesch had three kills, three digs, and matched Williams in the serving department with a pair of aces against the Blue Devils.

Setter Halle Brazelton was in near perfect form with 17 assists.


#4 ranked Unity victorious
TOLONODane Eisenmenger completed 19 of 26 passes for 253 yards and four touchdowns to lead Unity to a 27-12 victory against Prairie Central at Hicks Field on Friday in Illini Prairie Conference football. The Rockets enter 2023 ranked #4 in the preseason poll by the Associated Press.
SJO knocks off Sages
ST. JOSEPH - Heading into Friday night's annual opener against Monticello, the SJO football suffered seven losses in their last ten meetings on the gridiron against the Sages. When the lightning-delayed game concluded after midnight, senior starting quarteback Logan Smith had scored five times and threw a 31-yard TD to elevate the Spartans' in a 40-14 romp.

Smith led SJO's offensive effort with 102 rushing yards and 163 passing. Running back Justice Wertz finished with 67 yards on 12 carries, and speedy Tim Blackburn-Kelly got the call seven times for 38 of St. Joseph-Ogden's 418 total yards.


Tigers fall in their return to prep football
The Urbana football team played their first varsity game in three years on Saturday. The Tigers kicked off their return with on a road game at Centennial.

The Chargers scored 49 unanswered points before the Tigers finally scored twice in the fourth quarter. UHS, who will face Peoria Notre Dame this Friday, dropped the season opener to Centennial, 49-14.

"We will try to get better," said head coach Curtis Blanden after the game. "Rome wasn't built in a day. It's going to take some time and I have the time to do it."
