"50 States, 1 Movement": 50501 Encourages community action for next protest

Protesters at Champaign's *Hands Off!* rally line University Avenue in Champaign. Over a thousand people were at Westside Park on a chilly April 5 for two hours, joining more than an estimated 1 million protesters nationwide.

URBANA - The 50501 group, using the slogan "50 protests. 50 states. 1 movement," is gearing up for its next event. The grassroots organization that coordinated 1,400 protests worldwide on April 5, is calling for a "Day of Action" on April 19.

While individual chapters/states can organize protests, 50501 said on its website, "We just aren't doing a big national push since many states need more time to plan and coordinate. We need to think a bit more long term and practical."

Activists nationwide had hoped for another rally similar to April 5 from the organization. The group thinks Americans affected by the Trump administration's tariffs and job cuts can be better served Easter weekend by performing acts of kindness and service.

"You don't have to reinvent the wheel, if there's an organization locally that has been doing the good work ... ask how you can help!"

Four things they suggest include:

Donating to a local organization that feeds/clothes/helps local people, especially underserved areas.
Hosting a picnic where everyone brings a few items that are in good condition to swap out for something they might need from someone else.
Doing a clothing drive during a park day or community cookout.
Meeting up at the library to discuss different actions or start a book club.

Accident at Coler and University in Urbana injures four, leaves one dead

URBANA - Early Sunday morning, Urbana Police responded to a tragic scene at the intersection of University Avenue and Coler Avenue, where a severe traffic collision claimed the life of a young woman and left several others injured.

The incident, reported at 1:55 AM, involved a Honda Civic traveling eastbound on University Avenue, which had come to a stop at Coler Avenue due to a red traffic signal. According to preliminary investigations by Urbana Police, moments later, a Mitsubishi SUV traveling in the same direction approached at a high rate of speed and collided with the Civic. The impact resulted in extensive damage to both vehicles and caused severe injuries to all five occupants of the Civic.

In a statement from the Urbana Police Department, emergency responders from the Urbana Fire Department were quickly summoned to the scene, where they worked to extricate the injured passengers and administer life-saving measures. Of the five individuals in the Civic, two were discharged from the hospital after receiving treatment for minor injuries. Tragically, a 20-year-old woman who was a passenger in the Civic succumbed to her injuries at the hospital. The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of family members by the Champaign County Coroner’s office.

Following the collision, the driver of the Mitsubishi SUV fled the scene on foot, heading southbound on Coler Avenue. Despite efforts by law enforcement, the driver remains at large. Urbana Police detectives, along with an accident reconstruction investigator, conducted a thorough examination of the scene as part of the ongoing investigation.

Urbana Police have appealed to the public for assistance, urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward. They can contact the Urbana Police Department at 217-384-2320. While the investigation is ongoing, the Urbana Police Department plans to release further details as the investigation progresses.

It doesn't get any more DeLIXcious than a Night Market at the Square

Jill Van Voorst, owner of DeLIXcious, talks to customers about her custom-made chocolates at the Night Market at the Square. The Market teamed up with Urbana Arts and Culture to create a new weekly outdoor event from 6 - 9 pm until October 10. While produce vendors will be limited weekly, the event features arts and crafts vendors, food trucks, snack booths, and live music starting at 7 pm every Thursday. Works of art, DeLIXcious' selection included Milk Chocolate Hazelnut, Peanutbutter Salted Caramel, Vanilla Buttercream, Expresso Ganache, and Salted Caramels. The booth will return in two weeks on Thursday, September 19.

Samba Soul take the stage at Urbana's Night Market

Vivian Felicio performs with Samba Soul at Urbana's first Night Market at the Square at Lincoln Square Mall Thursday evening. Playing select classical Brazilian and contemporary songs from Elis Regina, Joao Gilberto, and other popular Brazilian musical artists, the five-member band entertained over a thousand shoppers and area residents, enjoying the mild weather and outdoor market. In addition to Felicio, the band includes George Turner on guitar, bass player Armand Beaudoin, saxophone player Chip McNeil, and the talented Ricardo Flores on drums. Night Markets will be held every Thursday for the next five weeks. The market will include live music, food trucks, and vendors offering food and artwork. Next week's entertainment features Panc8s.

Singing the blues

URBANA - Lead singer Ben Jenkins belts out soulful notes while singing with the Wise Guys at the 6th Annual Prairie Crossroads Blues Festival on Saturday. Also appearing on stage during the day were Rory Book and The Volumes, Cobalt Blues Band, and Funky Mojo Daddy. Over 200 music lovers filled the parking lot next to Bunny's Tavern, enjoying Jenkins and his fellow musicians on a beautiful fall day.

Urbana art fair attracts area art lovers

URBANA - Vendor booths line the drive around Crystal Lake Park for the two-day art fair this weekend. Forty vendors specializing in genres from mixed media to ceramics, photography to fiber-based art displayed their work for sale. Despite the warm midday temperatures, many patrons and art enthusiasts visited the shaded area of the park, exploring the various booths.

Crystal Lake Park Art Fair this Saturday and Sunday

URBANA - Over 40 artists are expected to display their artwork and wares at the 6th Annual Crystal Lake Park Art Fair this Saturday and Sunday. The two-day event held at Crystal Lake Park is a collaborative organizational effort between 40 North and the Urbana Park District.

The art fair will be open from 10 am to 4 pm on both days. Vendor booths will be located along the park road adjacent to the Lake House and the large pavilion. Local and regional artists will be offering paintings, textiles, ceramics, photography, jewelry, glass, mixed media, and more for sale.

Featured artists include Champaign native Megan Hinds, an alumna of Illinois State University, where she specialized in printmaking. She graduated with magna cum laude honors in 2016, and her work has been exhibited at the Jan Brandt Gallery, Joe McCauley Gallery, Heartland Community College, 40North Gallery, Spudnik Press Cooperative's Annex Gallery, The Art Center, and Lincoln Land Community College. Recently, her artwork was awarded the Best-Emerging Artist award at the Ann Arbor Art Festival in 2019, the Best 2-D Artist award at the Naperville Fine Art Festival, and the Best Printmaker award at the Deer Park Art Festival.

Cammie Meerdink, the artist known for her visionary work at Piper Pottery & Crafts in Mahomet, has been creating stunning and practical clay pieces for more than two decades. Her process involves incorporating natural elements, vintage artifacts, and contemporary influences to produce singular stoneware pieces. Meerdink has gained recognition in artistic communities for her imaginative and utilitarian pottery designed for both home and garden use.

Area runners finished in the top spots at the Mountain Goat race

OAKWOOD - One hundred and thirty-nine runners took part in this year's KRR Mountain Goat trail race last Saturday. The 37th installment of the race featured three separate events. Runners could choose to run a 15K (3 loops), 10K (2 loops), or 5K (1 loop) race.

Daniel Chen runs down Washington Ave in Urbana during the 2023 Illinois Half Marathon. Chen finished in 39th place overall at the Mountain Goat 15K race on Saturday, completing the course at 1:40:48.

Justin Jones of St. Joseph won the 15K run, finishing his three laps in 54 minutes and 21 seconds. The win comes on the heels of a third-place overall finish at Siberian Express held in January Kennukuk State Park.

The Mountain Goat is one of 24 races in the East Central Illinois annual race circuit. The next race in the series is the Clinton Trails Ultra on March 30. Organizers will host two events this year for long-distance runners, a 30-miler, which starts at 7 am, and a 10-miler starts at 8 am.

Urbana Park District hosting high school basketball tournament

URBANA - The Urbana Park District is sponsoring a seven-week basketball tournament for high school age students starting March 26. There is no registration fee and trophies will be awarded at the end of the 14-game open gym schedule.

Games will be played at Brookens Gym from 4-6 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Teams can play in one or on all 14 dates.

Craft happy hour this Wednesday at the Urbana Free Library

URBANA - The Urbana Free Library and Urbana Arts & Culture will host the January Craft Happy Hour for adults tomorrow from 6-7 PM on the main floor of the library near the east wing.

The first installment of the 2024 series of meetings will focus on creating Vision Boards. A vision board is a visual collection of photos, graphic images, words, phrases, and slogans that form a collage to inspire and motivate the creator to complete their goals. Vision boards help users through the self-efficacy theory and the reticular activating system to achieve success.

Crafting supplies and light refreshments will be provided.

This month's guest speaker is Lauren White, a local mixed media artist who will happy hour guests create a 2024 vision board to display in their home or office.

Strokes of genius, artist meet-up in Urbana a success

URBANA - Digital artist Kamau Grantham (center) talks to fellow artists at a meet-up for the CU BIPOC Artist Collective at the Gallery Art Bar on Wednesday. Co-sponsored by the City of Urbana’s Arts & Culture Program and the University of Illinois College of Fine and Applied Art, the event drew more than three dozen Champaign-Urbana artists specializing in various forms of media and expression. Organizers plan to sponsor future events bringing together talented and creative individuals who identify as Black, Indigenous, or Person of Color in the local community to network and share their experiences.
